After updating to the latest version of Window Live mail via
http://download.live.com/wlmail, it crashes whenever I tried to open the mail
program. My system is XP SP3 and the latest version of Window Live Mail.
Please help.

here is the error message:

Sorry, something unexpected happened and Windows Live Mail must close. You
most recent changes may not saved.

Try a Repair Install of Windows Live Essentials. If that does not help, try an Uninstall/Reinstall of WLMail.

I did that already. Uninstalled all the Microsoft Live Products... didn't
work. Still crashed.

If WLMail was uninstalled, how did you manage to get WLMail to crash if not present ?

If I ignored the first error, the WLM will run and eventually gives out
another error "Contacts failed to load. Window Live Mail is incorrectly
configured. please re-install".

Have you tried replacing the Contacts Store?

Follow this procedure to replace your Contacts Store for WLMail (and WLMessenger):

1. Close WLMail, WLMessenger, and other Windows Live applications.

2. Rename the 'Windows Live Contacts' folder* (by adding "(old)" to it) in the following location:

Vista & 7:
C:\Users\[UserName]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts

XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\[UserName]\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts

The Contacts Stores will be replaced when you next restart WLMail, and your Windows Live Contacts will be downloaded and synchronised when you sign into Windows Live with your Windows Live ID.

If you are using the Default (non-live) Contacts Store, you will need to re-import your contacts.

*Note that the path to the 'Windows Live Contacts' folder, involves a hidden folder, so ensure "Show hidden files and folders" is checked under Folder Options in Windows Explorer.

Hi Peter,

I tried that. I followed your direction and it didn't work. I even uninstall
the WLMail program and reinstall it, still got the same result. I am giving
up and using Outlook Express now.

AFAIK uninstalling WLM does not delete messages and indexes in its store folder.
Maybe there was a problem when WLM automatically (why this is not optional?)
imported messages from OE6 ...

BTW, do you have enough space on disk - WLM does not check it :(

The next step then, would be to perform a *Complete* Uninstall/Reinstall of WLMail as described at http://liveunplugged.spaces.live.com/Blog/cns!F92775FC46A390CA!226.entry
