Hi,

In order to receive Hotmail accounts, you must install Window Live Mail.
This possibility is not available in Windows Mail.

The reason being that Windows Mail (Outlook Express 2) no longer
supports most HTML eMail providers. Windows Live Mail, in the other
hand, does.

@live.com
@hotmail.com
@msn.com
etc..

are ALL HTML server based eMails. :) Windows Live Mail would be your
best friend here.

I have a 13 year old @msn.com account and I'm receiving from it using POP3
under Windows Mail.

I see you're mentioning HTML here. Did I miss something further up the
thread that limited the discussion to HTML methods for these accounts?

No...
Pop3 protocol accounts including msn.com legacy pop3(I.e. yours) are supported for setup/send/receipt in Vista's Windows Mail,
unlike Hotmail accounts(non-pop3 capable) that use either the WebDAV or DeltaSync html protocol.

Additionally, Hotmail Plus accounts are also capable of pop3 use in Vista Windows Mail.

In Vista, if the account is not pop3 capable(legacy pop3, Hotmail Plus), then Windows Live Mail must be used unless on also has
Outlook 2003/2007 **and** uses the Outlook Connector.

By the time I signed up for a Hotmail account, in 1999, MSN had discontiuned
POP3 access for new accounts. My only option is to use HTTPMail. MSN stopped
HTTPMail (WebDAV) access on free accounts around Sept. 26, 2004, so new free
Hotmail accounts, or Hotmail accounts not set up in MS Outlook Express by
that date, were unable even to use HTTPMail for access.

Older accounts, such as yours, were "grandfathered"; if you were using POP3
thirteen years ago, and kept the account active, you are one of the rare
free Hotmail users who have always had POP3 access.

Norman,
Fyi..if the account was 13 yrs old(circa '95) it pre-dates even Hotmail in the Msft ownership domain thus pop access was most
likely due to the legacy aspect of the msn.com account(dialup, byo-isp) and pop3 retained by not installing Msn Explorer 5.6 or
later(which converted the pop3 to an http only WebDAV account).

I.e. Hotmail with the exception of a Hotmail Plus account which can access pop3 servers only other link to Pop3 was within the
Hotmail interface which for a period of time(ceased about 5 yrs ago) allowed any Hotmail account to pull other pop3 accounts
messages down to its Inbox(this feature since ceasing for free is only available on Plus or subscription based Premium or
sub-accounts of Premium).
