The free news server at http://nntp.motzarella.org/ carries some tnn.rec
newsgroups (but not alt.tnn.rec). It also carrries various adobe
newsgroups.

Before using this server, you need to visit their website, to register.

I use news.motzarella.org for alt and adobeforums.com. You'll have
to sign up at their websites first.

Hi, Joseph.

I've heard rumors that several ISPs have decided to stop carrying some or
all of Usenet. :>(

Which of your servers has shut down? The name may be interesting and/or
useful to others.

Search Google for "free news server" and you should get over 15,000 hits.
No, I don't know which ones carry which NGs, but when you find a good
server, please post the information here.

These Microsoft public newsgroups - also available via the web as Microsoft
Communities and also known as discussion groups - are still available, of
course, by direct connection to the server, which is free and does not
require a login. Just click here:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop

That should fire up your news reader (if it is not already running), create
the News Account (if you don't already have it set up), and bring you right
back to here, reading this same message in a different format. (You
probably know this but many newbies and other lurkers might not.)

Many other news servers "slurp" messages from these NGs and relay them to
their own subscribers, so this Live Mail NG, for example, may be available
from many of those servers, including the ones you'll find with Google. But
those servers can lose or skip messages or get them late or out of sequence.
For these MS NGs, it's best to subscribe directly to the MS public servers.
But non-MS NGs are not available here, of course.

Some other companies also provide newsgroups for their customers. Adobe may
be one of those.

My understanding is that the ISPs' decision to drop Usenet is in response to
the New York Attorney General's attempts to stop porn and other undesirable
content distributed largely in the .alt and other NG groups. A user in the
Quicken NG recently reported that, "Verizon has bowed to pressure born by NY
State Attorney General and has announced it will drop access to all alt.
news groups effective June 24, 2008."

Stay tuned. I'm sure there will be many more developments before we hear
The Rest of The Story about this.
