Then see if you can compose and click send. If the message gets written
to the Outbox folder without you getting the error message that says the
problem is not with the compose window but rather when WLM tries to send
the message from the Outbox to the mail server.
One possible cause of the problem is at Tools, Accounts, Mail,
Properties, General the Name field is blank.

I cannot get out of the Compose window with the message, when I click Send I
get the error message and the window hangs until I click OK in the error
message box, so nothing reaches the Outbox. I have exactly the same set up on
my XP laptop and all works perfectly.
Any further advice would be most appreciated. Thank you.

Have you tried repairing WLM(Programs and Features/Windows Live Essentials - double click to start the installer, when prompted
choose the 'Repair Option')

I excluded wlmail.exe in MSE but unfortunately no difference. I had tried
repairing before but I tried again after your comment, again unfortunately no
change in WLM. Your help is much appreciated and I would be most pleased to
hear of anything else you could suggest to solve this problem.
Thank you.

Thank you Robear once again. After the Norton removal I did indeed do a
clean uninstall and reinstalled WLM and still the problem continued.
Another thought I can only download WLM build 14.0.8089.0726 what about
trying a previous build? If so could anyone give me a link to downlaod it.
Incidently where on Windows 7 are the WLM mails stored, I could find them in
XP but I am having difficulty in W7.
Any help form anyone would be most appreciated.

I have done nearly everything that you listed and the error continues
however I lost my nerve when it came to the 'complete' unistall/reinstall
method for WLM. I feel sure that it would solve the issue but having printed
out the link you sent me I judder with messing around with the registry and
other horrors that seem to lie in wait for me!
I am almost for leaving WLM alone and using a new mail programme but it
still annoys me that I would lose 14 years worth of e-mails in the same
programme, though I know of course that they can be saved to open at will,
though jumbled up, now I have found the folder.
Maybe I will pluck up courage and try the uninstall but I need some time to
think about it!
Thanks again for all your hard work to try and resolve my problem.

Thank you for your encouragement with the 'complete' uninstall/reinstall. I
followed your URL as far as I could, some of the items to tackle had
disappeared after I had made the one registry change which was necessary.
Following exactly, including disabling MSE, WLM was reinstalled but although
the WLM small screen appeared on start up there was no logging in and the
following error message appeared "WLM could not be started. Calender corrupt
data that is forcing WLM to close. 0x8E5E0408." I rebooted several times but
the problem continued.
My nerve cracked at that point and I restored the system to before the
'complete' uninstall process was started. WLM started and automatically
restored the back up of folders and files. This took quite a while as I have
many storage folders and thousands of mails saved from the mid 90's!
The news is that everything is working, the problem is solved, I can compose
a mail and send it to the outbox. The system is fully operational again.
I cannot tell you how grateful I am to you. I only wish that this was a more
public site where I could sing your praises more loudly. Thank you very much
indeed for your patience, your time and your help.
