Windows Live Mail hangs in the compose window

problem with the mail box settings, the problem lies solely in the compose
window when I click to send to the Outbox the system hangs until I click OK
on the error masessage "The message could not be sent. An error has
occurred". Can anyone help me to try and resolve my problem in Windows 7, in
XP with exactly the same set up everything works perfectly.

If so uncheck it.
Then see if you can compose and click send. If the message gets written
to the Outbox folder without you getting the error message that says the
problem is not with the compose window but rather when WLM tries to send
the message from the Outbox to the mail server.
One possible cause of the problem is at Tools, Accounts, Mail,
Properties, General the Name field is blank.

You might try to temporarily exclude wlmail.exe in MSE to prevent it being scanned...
- Though I suspect, something else is in play that is causing WLM(wlmail.exe) to crash
Have you tried repairing WLM(Programs and Features/Windows Live Essentials - double click to start the installer, when prompted
choose the 'Repair Option')

Thank you Robear once again. After the Norton removal I did indeed do a
clean uninstall and reinstalled WLM and still the problem continued.
Another thought I can only download WLM build 14.0.8089.0726 what about
trying a previous build? If so could anyone give me a link to downlaod it.
Incidently where on Windows 7 are the WLM mails stored, I could find them in
XP but I am having difficulty in W7.
Any help form anyone would be most appreciated.

The default Message Store location for W7 is:
%localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail
(C:\Users\[UserName]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail)
Other software could be interfering with WLMail's operation, so try running WLMail after a Clean Boot* (ensuring that your security software is not protecting itself from having its processes/services disabled). See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796
Booting into Safe Mode with Networking (F8 at Startup->...) and trying to run WLMail is another diagnostic option.
A corrupt Windows System File is another possibility, so try running 'System File Checker' from an elevated Command Prompt (sfc /scannow). See: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files-sfc-command.html
Also scan your hard drive for errors (My computer->right-click drive->Properties->Tools [tab]->Error-checking [section]->Check now... [button]->'Automatically fix file system errors' [check]->Start [button]->Schedule disk check [button]->Restart computer.
For a look at the Chkdsk log in W7, open Event Viewer:
Start->Run->eventvwr [type]->OK->Windows Logs->Application->Information [Level]->Wininit [Source]->1001 [Event ID]
(It is normal for Chkdsk to remove unused index entries and unused security descriptors every time it is run. These do not indicate a problem with the file system).
If Chkdsk has found and fixed errors, it is a good idea to run Chkdsk again - as many times as needed until no problems are found, and then reboot the System yet again, without scheduling a Chkdsk.

A Complete Uninstall/Reinstall may well solve the problem.
The registry can indeed be daunting and dangerous, but if you create a Restore Point prior to opening Regedit, and be careful to delete only the advised Registry Keys, you should be fine. By all means do some research on the Registry beforehand to increase your confidence.
If you prefer, you can start off by only renaming the Message Store, and see if that alone solves the problem.
By the way, you can use Details view to view your e-mail files in Windows Explorer, and add the necessary Columns to make sense of them (e.g. 'Date sent', 'From', 'From addresses', 'Size', 'Subject', 'To addresses').
