I was looking at the Window Live blog and saw a comment about switching the
Outgoing port from 25 to 587; Is this a good thing? Is it save?

- See second post by JT.

I switched to Port 587 and the message was sent.

I'm getting an error message (see below) when I try to send/reply messages
using either DeltaSync or POP3 (I can receive messages).

Oh, okay, this PC Magazine article says Port 587 is good.

Port 465 should also be useable.

In any case, it's simply a matter of both the server and the mail client
being able to support the same port. Safety isn't an issue.

If it works, you are fine.

Hi Michael,

Thanks! I'm going to switch to port 465 as it's the same that Gmail suggests
(besides port 25).

I tried port 587 and it worked but will go with port 465.

Sterling

PS Thanks for replying my other post. I'm using the web ui of MS newsgroup
it's saying that there's an error in posting, so if that message doesn't
reach the newsgroup, please know that I tried and thank you for your reply.

I think you'll find that smtp.live.com does not support port 465, but
be sure to let us know either way. The fact that Gmail supports it
is immaterial.

Hi Gary,

Thanks for the Gmail info regarding port 465. I switched from port 25 (the
default setup port) to port 587 and was able to send emails with Hotmail POP
(free account) but the sent message copy was not stored in Hotmail.

Then I tried port 465 and WLM "stuck" on "Connecting..." after a while, I
got an error message.

Thanks for confirming that for smtp.live.com port 587 works, but port 465 doesn't.

Your sent copy is a separate issue, unrelated to the port number.

You're welcome Gary, and thanks for your assistance.

What I'm going now is sending a BCC along with replies so that I can move
that copy to the Sent folder in Hotmail (web ui). I was surprised to see that
there were no copies being saved. (Gmail saves a copy in its web ui when
using POP.)

Use of a pop3 protocol for Hotmail in WLM does not sync with the Hotmail server.
Sent, Drafts, Deleted, etc are only local in WLM. If you wish to have messages available in both places until deleted then do not
use pop3.

I see. I guess Live Hotmail would handle POP3 like Gmail, sent messages in
WLM are stored in Gmail's Sent folder.

DeltaSync did sync folders but if I deleted a message in WLM, it would also
delete in Hotmail.

Thanks winston,

No...sent messages in all pop3 accounts would only reside in that pop3 account's Sent items folder in WLM

Hi winston,

Sorry. I meant to say that I guessed Hotmail POP would work like Gmail POP
and store a copy of a WLM sent message in Hotmail web, like in Gmail web. Not
that a message sent with Hotmail POP would be placed in Gmail POP.

The only way I can keep a copy of a sent message with WLM Hotmail POP is by
sending me a BCC of the email to move to the Sent folder in Hotmail web.

I understood. Hotmail Pop3 does not store sent messages like Gmail.
A pop account setup in WLM will have its own set of folders(including a Sent folder).
If you wish to keep a copy in the Hotmail web server sent folder then you've some additional effort to place on in that location.

You've other options.
- Create a separate DeltaSync Account in WLM for that same Hotmail email account and disable it from being included in a
send/receive, then routinely drag the 'important' sent messages from the pop3 sent items folder to the web accounts sent folder.
or
Keep you sent items local by copy/moving from the pop3 accounts folder to the user created folder in the storage folder.

Even with the above or your BCC approach..one would ultimately ask...if the intent is to use the web server as the repository for
backup and/or sent messages, then why not just use the Http account instead of Pop3

Hi winston,

Great. You understood :-) I sometimes tend to forget information and only
later realize I should have included, or compose a message in a way that
could have been better.

Thanks for the inactive DeltaSync tip! That sounds perfect :-)

I like POP over HTTP because when I read my messages in WLM, I delete them
and have WLM purge the messages at closing of the program. With HTTP, the
messages will be deleted on Hotmail web, I think. Everything I do in WLM is
"temporary", meaning nothing is stored. Storage is left on the web.

Thanks again for the suggestion,

Yes,
If you delete messages from an Http acount that is using DeltaSync(or the earlier and suprisingly still available WebDAV) the
message after synchronzation will be gone from the local store and the web server.

That's why I prefer POP or HTTP (and IMAP). I can delete a message in WLM and
still have a copy of it on the Web (If I set the account to work that way,
which I think IMAP can do the same).

Thanks winston,

In simplest form...
Pop pulls messages off the server unless the email client is configured to leave the original present.

DeltaSync downloads a copy of the message, leaving the original on the server intact until the user performs a subsequent
action(read, delete, move, etc)

I have Gmail POP configured to leave a message on its servers. I have to log
in to Gmail once in a while and delete messages I don't need anymore but I
don't mind do it. I think it was on Wikipedia that I read POP4 will include
features from IMAP.

I see. I have my ISP's email with WLM POP but it uses different ports and
settings than those of Gmail POP.
