When I click on Windows Live Mail I get the following window:
"Windows Live Mail could not be started. Closing Windows Live Mail. Your
calendar contains corrupt data that is forcing Windows Live Mail to close.
(0x8000FFFF)"
Does anyone know what that means and Iwhat I can do?
Thanks.

What Operating System?
Do you sign into Windows Live in WLMail with one or more WL ID's?
- If so, are you currently signed in?
- If so, do you use the Default Calendar (not signed in) at all?

The error message indicates that the Calendar Database is corrupt and WLMail cannot repair it.

This may be accurate, in which case you can force WLMail to replace it by renaming the appropriate Calendar Store (or the main Calendars Store). However, corruption of certain components of WLEssentials can also cause this error message.

So before replacing the Calendar Store/Cache, run the Repair option in the Uninstaller for Windows Live Essentials.

Report back the result, and if it did not correct the issue, we can advise you further.

Well, I ran a repair and still the same message. I have never used a calendar
so I don't know how to answer the question about calendars. I am running
windows 7. Where is the calendar store/cache? Where is the calendar? As you
can tell I know little. All I want to do is get email.
Please advise further.
Thank you.

I had the same problem, which cleared up on a reboot, but then Live Mail
froze up when I would hit "Reply all" or "New." The uninstall repair seems to
have fixed the problem, but I'm wondering it it is related to recent messages
from AOL and Windows Live about changing the ports for outgoing mail on
Outlook to preserve Sent Mail folders. I had changed those, but it appears
to me that the repair process put them back (Port 25 on AOL and Port 465 on
Gmail). I, too and running Windows 7.

Okay then, go ahead and rename your main Calendars Store/Cache* folder to 'Calendars (old)' and allow it to be recreated when you restart WLMail.

*The main Calendars Store/Caches is a folder named 'Calendars' within the WLMail Message Store**.

**WLMail's Message Store is a directory named 'Windows Live Mail'. The path to the Message Store, in its default location involves a hidden folder, so ensure that '(o) Show hidden files, folders, and drives' (or similar) is checked under Folder Options in Windows Explorer.

The default Message Store locations are:

Vista & 7:
%localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail
(C:\Users\[UserName]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail)

XP:
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail
(C:\Documents and Settings\[UserName]\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail)

It seems unrelated to me, and the Repair of WLEssentials would not have touched the accounts data.

When you change the ports and SSL on an account, click on the 'Apply' button and confirm your changes before closing the Account Properties dialog box.

Glad to hear that the Repair Install resolved your issue though...

well, i did everything you asked and nothing improved. What is interesting is
there is nothing in the calendar folder and everything in the windows live
mail is written in blue as opposed to the standard black. Maybe I'll just get
a mac.

The Default Calendar Store is a Protected System Folder, so if 'Hide protected operating system files' is set, you would not see it.

What I suggest that you try now, after creating a Restore Point, is a Complete Uninstall/Reinstall as described at http://liveunplugged.spaces.live.com/Blog/cns!F92775FC46A390CA!226.entry

Well, Peter R. thanks for your time but nothing seems to work. Windows
continues to frustrate even with the new 7. I guess for now I'll try another
email program perhaps thunderbird. But Mac seems the way to go. For years
Windows seems to come up with something that wastes too much of my time and
in this case yours. People I know who have Macs never seem to have these
problems.
Thanks again- but I give up. Bill Gates-you win.

I have the exact same problem as rkrupka. Same error after a brand new
installation of Windows Live on a recent, clean installation of Windows 7.
Tried:
- Delete the calendar folder --> Nope
- Logged in on line, created a new calendar, set as default, deleted old
ones. Deleted local calendar folder again for good measure --> Nope
- Ran repair on Windows Live and rebooted --> Nope
- Uninstalled Windows Live Mail, Rebooted, Reinstalled --> Nope

Still getting the same error. Never used Live Mail, guess I never will. *sigh*

problem. Unbelievable! Now I do give up!

Did you format the hard drive before you reinstalled Win 7?
Doing an install on top of the previous install will not overwrite the
Registry.

Is this a new computer that came with Win 7 or did you upgrade an old
computer running Vista?
The blue folders indicates that the folders are compressed. Do you have any
other folders that are blue?
How much free space do you have an your hard drive?

Did you try a Complete Uninstall/Reinstall as described at http://liveunplugged.spaces.live.com/Blog/cns!F92775FC46A390CA!226.entry ?

Other things to try:

-- Scan for Malware...

-- Other software could be interfering with WLMail's operation, so try running WLMail after a Clean Boot* (ensuring that your security software is not protecting itself from having its processes/services disabled). See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796

-- Booting into Safe Mode with Networking (F8 at Startup->...) and trying to run WLMail is another diagnostic option.

-- A corrupt Windows System File is another possibility, so try running 'System File Checker' from an elevated Command Prompt (sfc /scannow). See: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files-sfc-command.html

-- Also scan your hard drive for errors (My computer->right-click drive->Properties->Tools [tab]->Error-checking [section]->Check now... [button]->'Automatically fix file system errors' [check]->Start [button]->Schedule disk check [button]->Restart computer.

For a look at the Chkdsk log in W7, open Event Viewer:

Start->Run->eventvwr [type]->OK->Windows Logs->Application->Information [Level]->Wininit [Source]->1001 [Event ID]

(It is normal for Chkdsk to remove unused index entries and unused security descriptors every time it is run. These do not indicate a problem with the file system).

If Chkdsk has found and fixed errors, it is a good idea to run Chkdsk again - as many times as needed until no problems are found, and then reboot the System yet again, without scheduling a Chkdsk.

The WLMail Message Store is sometimes set for compression when WLMail creates or re-creates it. Whilst it is generally not a problem, you can uncompress it:

With WLMail closed, right-click your WLMail Message Store folder->Properties->General [tab]->Attributed [section]->Advanced... [button]->[ ] Compress contents to save disk space [uncheck]->OK [button]->Apply [button]->Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files->OK [button].

Right, so you basically did a Clean Install Upgrade from XP to W7 (since an In-place Upgrade from XP is not possible).

And yet you still get the following error on startup of WLMail:

"Windows Live Mail could not be started. Closing Windows Live Mail. Your calendar contains corrupt data that is forcing Windows Live Mail to close. (0x8000FFFF)"

What did you install before WLMail?

Probably the next step is to get help from Windows Live Mail Support:

-- Click on any FAQ item in the left pane
-- At bottom-right of page, click on 'Get more help'

I finally found a solution that worked for me so I thought I'd share it here.
All I had to do was go to the Date & Time settings in Windows 7 and un-check
the box for automatically adjusting for daylight savings time. That was all
that was needed. Live Mail launched just fine immediately after that.

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium in Parallels 5 on a Mac.

I have been having problems with Windows Live Mail and have spent literally
hours following these suggestions without complete success. By that, I mean
that the programme works correctly some times and not on others.

As I seem not to be getting anywhere I have now downloaded Mozilla
Thunderbird which seems to be working reliably so far.

I must add that I never had any problems with Windows Mail under Vista. I
suppose that's what they call 'progress'!

Perhaps you are using the "sign-in" option, which most of us are, but
sometimes your internet connection is bad so you're having trouble signing
in automatically during startup? Some of us have noted annoyances with the
interface changes, but the current non-beta version has been reliably
consistent, at least with a solid internet connection.

Are you also using WLM for Newsgroups? If you are, are you able to
compact the database on shutdown (for testing set to do this after every
shutdown)? If you cannot compact without WLM crashing then delete the
Newsgroup account then add it again. After you add newsgroups and download
headers you MUST leave WLM to make its indexes, perhaps for an hour or so,
before then shutting down and letting it compact the database. Thereafter
you can set the compact say every 50 shutdowns. I had the same problem and
now it all works fine.
