Very often when I close windows live mail the process wlmail.exe
doesn't stop properly so I have to kill form task manager.

The problem is that at the next restart of WLM sometime it has to
recover the mail database.

Is there a fix for this problem ?

I've got WindowsXP Professional SP2 and WLM 2008 Build 12.0.1606

thanks

There is a shut-down bug in WLMail 12.0.1606 that may be the cause of your problem, whereby wlmail.exe remains resident after exiting WLMail, and requires termination [End Process] through Windows Task Manager. It generally occurs when the send option "Upload Larger Images to the Web When Sending a Photo E-mail" is *un-checked*, but it does not usually manifest until a new compose window, or a saved draft has been opened.

This option is available only when you are signed in, but if it is un-checked it still causes the shutdown bug even when not signed in.

So make sure the option "Upload Larger Images to the Web When Sending a Photo E-mail" is *checked* at: Tools->Options->Send [tab] (available only when signed into Windows Live through WLMail).

However, if you do find that "Upload Larger Images to the Web When Sending a Photo E-mail" is actually checked (which it is by default), then just uncheck it and click "Apply", then check it again and click "Apply" again. Some have had to do that to fix their WLMail shut down bug that was occurring despite that option having never been unchecked.

I'm not usually signed into WIndows Live, so I can never see that
option.

Maybe I can try to change a particular registry key...do you know
which one ?

Do you have a Live ID to use to sign in and change or verify or toggle off/on that option ?

No, it won't work without being signed in to a Live ID.
Hopefully this bug will be fixed in the next release, which is due soon.

I've trie to create a new WIndows Live Id, signed in, check, uncheck,
close and re-open WLM in many different sequence, but it doens't seem
to have solve completly my problem.

Another question.

How can I disable the attempt of Windows Live Id profile to sign in at
startup of WLM ?

You're welcome Blaine. Thanks for the feedback.

You must be still using WLMail 12.0.1606. This particular shut-down bug appears to be fixed in the latest version of WLMail.

Hi,

I also have the latest version and it must have that bug. I've tried
checking and unchecking that option and it still doesn't work. I have to
always go the task mgr and end the process so that I can open it again.

Try changing your compaction interval to 1 then open and immediately
close WLMail. Allow the compaction. Does it work?

In order to avoid your hang you may find it just as convenient to leave
that setting and reply No each time you actually use WLMail.
(It probably wouldn't work then if you replied Yes, anyway.
Yesterday, the only thing I did after opening it before closing it
was inspect at my Options--nothing changed, no connections were made
but the compaction still failed when I whimsically decided to try replying
Yes to the prompt. YMMV.)

FWIW in the new version I never have seen the hang
but it was a frequent occurrence in the previous version,
even with the forced prompt each time.

Good luck

Tried that (Thanks!). Unfortunately it didn't work. Before and after
compaction change, I can only open it 2x before it hangs. It's happening on
my laptop and desktop after I upgraded to this newer version. Wish I could go
back to the previous version.

What does that mean? The idea is to make the change and close it.
If it's like mine that instance would prompt but the compaction if requested
would fail because you did something while it was open,
namely, make the change. It's the first open instance after the change
that you want to test and what you must do is immediately
close it--so you get the prompt that you can usefully reply Yes to.
So, are you getting the prompt when you close the app?
And have you *yet* successfully done a compaction?

What do you have them configured to do automatically?
Perhaps you also need to avoid doing anything like that?
One possibility for avoiding such automated actions would be
to set Work Offline before opening and closing the app.
Unfortunately I think that if you are configured to do a logon
with a Live ID that that procedure would squawk at your
being in an offline state. That might be enough to make
a compaction fail. So you then would have to disable that
login too. Etc.

Good luck

Using WLM Version 2009 (Build 14.0.8064.0206) I also get hung up when the
WLMAIL.EXE process does not terminate after closing WLM. I have tried the
check/uncheck option on uploading graphics, which did not solve the problem.
I have tried setting the compaction interval to 1, which seems to have
worked. Stopping and restarting WLM has been successful three times, but I
have not tested after a system reboot.

Is there another version of the software in the pipeline? Is it expected to
deal with this bug directly?

Thanks in any event for the temporarily successful fix.
