Note: The beta goes 'Live' tomorrow(June 24)

Announcing the new Windows Live Essentials beta!
http://windowsteamblog.com/windows_live/b/windowslive/archive/2010/06/23/announcing-the-new-windows-live-essentials-beta.aspx

<qp>
Tomorrow, hot on the heels of the Hotmail roll-out, the new Windows Live Essentials becomes available for public beta testing.
Windows Live Essentials beta requires Windows Vista or Windows 7, and is available in English, French, Dutch, Japanese, Portuguese,
Simplified Chinese, or Spanish. As soon as the beta goes live tomorrow (we’ll update this blog post when it does), you'll be able
to get it from here.

If Hotmail (new) has been rolled out worldwide why is my inbox no different
to what it was (I am in UK). I have no flags, sweep or any of the new
functionality.

Thanks
Colin

<qp>
You may start seeing the new features in your inbox as early as today, features like the new Sweep menu, the freshly integrated Office Web Apps, huge new attachment limits up to 10 GB using SkyDrive, and the ability to create and send photo albums right from Hotmail. If you don’t see these features today, please hold on just a little while longer – everybody will be upgraded this summer.

You might be wondering why everybody doesn’t get the new version immediately. Well, as my friend Phil explained in his blog post Hotmail tips the scales, our Hotmail servers are grouped into clusters, and we have hundreds of clusters. We start by upgrading a single cluster, wait to make sure that it’s running smoothly and that we didn’t miss anything during testing, and then we continue on to the next cluster. If we find a bug, we’ll fix it before continuing further, and give that fix to everybody who has been upgraded so far. That way, we release the highest quality code as we proceed, and we can minimize downtime for everybody. Accounts are assigned to clusters to best balance our total account load, not by country or by tenure of the account, so each account is as likely as the next to be upgraded. Given this, we can’t move any individual accounts up or down the migration line.

Hi, Winston.

Thanks for the heads-up! ;<)

The beta build (15.3.2804.0607) appeared about mid-morning today; I
downloaded it and installed it after lunch. I see a lot to like in it - and
lots of bugs still to be worked out. I hope a new build will be arriving
SOON.

At least a couple of bugs are in the Signature area. First is the inability
to select from multiple Sigs. Second is lack of line feeds in the Sig,
converting my multi-line Sig into the single-line version below.

But it's good to actually SEE Wave 4 at last. ;<)

The lack of line feeds will be fixed in the next build. You can use <br> for
now (it will continue to work in the next build).

Someone gave me this workaround for that signature line feed bug:
Replace each line feed with <BR> (include the brackets).

p.s. The clustered rollout of Hotmail will probably also create some additional confusion with the release of the WL Essentials
beta...while it’s the same Platform(Live) Hotmail's UI and other accessible new features in the Hotmail(i.e.. on the web) are not
duplicated within Windows Live Mail Wave 4(e.g. Sweep, etc).

Separately, One feature that has yet to be rolled out in Hotmail and quickly mentioned in an earlier Windows Live Team
article(blog) is the ability for subfolders in the Hotmail web UI...whether or not we will see those subfolders or have similar
ability to create subfolders in WLM for Http accounts(setup to use the DeltaSync server) was not discussed in that article nor was
a time frame of implementation provided....hopefully if that does come to fruition at some future time, let's hope WLM has that
ability too!

cf. ****Dick Craddock blog post****
http://windowsteamblog.com/windows_live/b/windowslive/archive/2010/05/17/re-inventing-windows-live-hotmail-the-next-generation-of-personal-email.aspx
<qp>
In this post we covered a few highlights of the new Hotmail and in follow-up posts we’ll go into more depth on other areas that we
invested in, including enhanced account protection, full-session SSL, multiple email accounts, ****subfolders****, contact
management, and ever-growing storage.
</qp>
and
cf. Mike Shackwitz confirmation of the availability in Hotmail (not WLM)
<qp>
...proper folder support is part of the Wave, but will be released a little later.

Hi, Geoff.

Thanks for that good news. And I see that you are already using a later
build. ;<)

Now, my remaining question is: Where do I type that <BR>? AHA! Figgered
it out! And for others who are wondering:
In Options | Signatures, my MS Public Newsgroups default Edit Signature box
now shows:

r...@grandecom.net<br>
Microsoft Windows MVP<br>

Windows Live Mail 2010 (15.3.2804.0607) in Win7 Ultimate x64)

...and it produces the result shown below. When I'm finished with my draft
and ready to sign and send, I type the "RC", and then, with the cursor right
after the "C", click Insert (the little pen that is now in my QAT) - but the
placement of the "-- " is still problematic.

If you're composing a sig in WLM that you will save to HTML, use
"shift-enter" to add a "hard return". That effectively does the same thing,
and the resulting html file should display normally when used as a sig.

The build numbering we use isn’t even as hard to understand as yogurt expiration dates at
the store .

15 – is the major version
3 – is the milestone (the beta is M3)
2726 – is a build number that we increment each build so we can have multiple builds per
day.
528 (is May 28th) 0607 is June 7th.

So 0607 is newer.

Note: The beta goes 'Live' tomorrow(June 24)

As someone that has been very critical of Windows Live Mail in the past I
must say that I am very impressed by the new Beta version. The text is
easier to read, the bolding is back on NNTP News Subjects, the new ribbon
looks great. Great work Windows Live Team. I was about to switch the
laptop I am working on at the moment from Windows 7 to Ubuntu tonight when I
learned of the Wave 4 beta release. The beta has given me renewed faith
that MS is listening and this machine will be staying with Windows 7 and
Windows Live as a result. As someone that uses Windows, OS X and Linux and
various email and NNTP clients on each, I must say that this may quickly
become my preferred Email and Newsgroup client. I'd just about given up on
WLM but you've changed that. Thank You!
