All these "Windows Live" appellations have thrown me in a tizzy. MSN
Hotmail is now "Windows Live Hotmail." I assume that this is not the same
as Windows Live Mail, is not beta, and is just a conversion of Hotmail. Is
my assumption correct?

More or less. MSN Hotmail is being phased out as I write. Windows
Live Mail is a completely different animal - a mail/news/rss client
installed on your computer that links quite nicely (eg. by sharing
contacts) to Hotmail and Windows Live Messenger, but also to other
mail providers like your ISP and Gmail.
