Hi. I use XP SP3.

Everything was going perfectly well with my previous Windows Live Mail Beta
but suddenly after I installed the new beta and after a while it started
giving me the following message:

Sorry. Something unexpected happened and Windows Live Mail must close. Your
most recent changes may not be saved.

What triggered the problem, might be that I tried to make Windows Live Mail
the default email client in Internet Options. Dunno if it has anything to do
with it.

Microsoft people! Any help?

Can you tell when you receive this message ? Is it on startup ? When your
computer wakes up from a stand by mode ? etc.

Actually, on the startup, although when I first made it the default email
client, the program was already open and it crashed immediately.

BTW: Thanks to Colin Brown in this post:

Re: Windows Live Mail 14.0.5027.0908 (Beta)

for posting a way to roll back to the previous stable version which actually
works fine.

PS. Out of curiosity - which font is the new default one? It's great!

The problem that you're facing is that we fail to load your Contacts. Here
are steps that will allow you to start over:
1. Shutdown WL Mail (and other WL applications if running).
2. Rename this folder: C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live
Contacts
3. Restart WL Mail.

See if it solves your problem.

I'm also experiencing this problem. Using Vista x64. The problem appears
when I try to start the program.

Renaming the contacts folder unfortunately did not work.

Eyal, I wanted to report that I have been having the same problem and your
solution did, in fact, work flawlessly. No more error messages for me.

Many thanks!

Nevermind. Problem solved - my mistake. I was renaming the "Contacts"
folder in the Windows Live Mail AppData, rather than the "Windows Live
Contacts" folder...

Thanks, Eyal [MSFT], that saved my WLM too! When I looked at the
WindowsLiveMail.log, it looked like the Calendar wasn't syncing right. Would
never have guessed that something was wrong with Contacts. So simple, after I
moved everything from my std user acc't to my Admin acc't to fix it the first
time. <wry grin>

I am having the same problem but do not really understand what you are saying
I should do.

You say Rename this folder: C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows
Live Contacts

What do I name it?

Sorry to be dumb.

It doesn't matter what you rename it to, just as long as you change the
filename so that the software won't see the original folder name on your
system. I'd suggest renaming the Windows Live Contacts folder to
OLD_Windows_Live_Contacts so that it would be easy to remember what it was
originally.

I'm trying this, but I don't have a
C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts folder. It
seems like Windows Live Mail is using my contacts off of Hotmail. There is a
contacts folder called: C:\Documents and
Settings\<user>\Contacts\<x...@hotmail.com folder, which is mentioned in the
registry as a Windows Live Contacts folder under
HKLU\...\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts\Database, but renaming this
folder has no effect - the problem remains and when I open my contacts in WLM
it still finds all the contacts.

I am running the same WLM version mentioned below in Win XP SP3.

C:\Users\etc is for Vista
For XP the Contact folder is:
C:\Documents and Settings\<your windows id>\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts

There is no registry hive called HKLU
The correct place to look in the registry for the Contacts folder
associated with the Default account and a Live ID(hotmail, live, msn.com
etc) is
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts\Database

When looking at the above key in the registry, one will see
C:\Documents and Settings\Merlin\Contacts\<your live id>\ with a data field
containing the numerical name of the folder.

The registry key name value..
C:\Documents and Settings\Merlin\Contacts\<your live id>\
is really pointing to...
C:\Documents and Settings\<your windows id>\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts
which(when viewed in Explorer) one will find that numerical named folder
containing the contacts' database, backup database, and log files.

Thanks, fingers faster than brain. I meant HKCU.

Anyway, all sorted.

The fix works great - I delete the Windows Live Contacts folder, and then
Windows Live Mail will load - however....

I have to do this every 2-4 times I run Windows Live Mail. WLM otherwise
works great, but this is a huge pain in the butt. (same issue happens with
Messenger, it won't sign in when this happens). Its groundhog day every
day, since I have to delete contacts at least once a day to keep it working.

This bug has been around now for several versions of WLM. I currently have
14.0.8064.0206 running on Vista SP1. Is this a WLM bug that is going to be
fixed anytime soon? Or is there some known software incompatibility causing
the issue? I searched several archives but could not find anything

When was the last time you compacted the WLM database?

1. Tools/Options/Advanced/Maintenance/
- reset Compact Counter to 1
2. Delete all folders in the Storage Folders/Recovered Items folder(do not delete the Recovered Items folder)
3. Empty the Storage Folders/Deleted Items folder
4. File/Work Offline
5. File/Exit

Do not interrupt the compaction

Open WLM and reset the counter to the previous number(I leave mine set at 50)
