No, it was not wrong. I have four Hotmail accounts; two in 'hotmail.com'
domain, one each in, 'live.com' domain and 'msn.com' domain. Each has a
separate password.
Best to try logging in to the new account in your browser, and verify that
the password works. Then triple check that you are typing the exact same
email address, and exact same password when setting up the account in
Windows Live Mail.

Yes. Question now, is, did you go to the web site to set up the new account?
The "Add e-mail account" link within Windows Live Mail only works if you
already have an email account. If you have not, yet, created an email
account at the web site, the information you added in Windows Live Mail has
no account to find when you try to log in.
Unfortunately, those who wrote the program probably know as much about how
email accounts work as I do, and just assumed the end user would know that
you can't create a new account using Windows Live Mail as a account creation
agent. I don't know of a single, normal POP3/IMAP/SMTP email client which
can act as an account creation agent. Creating accounts is normally
accomplished by going to the email service web site and setting up the
account there.

With Windows Live Mail, you can just follow the Wizard and create an
HTTPMail account for any Hotmail account. All that changed was a protocol
used by MS Outlook Express. Windows live changed from using something
called, "WebDAV" to using something called, "DeltaSync". MSOE does not
understand "DeltaSync", so "HTTPMail" doesn't work any more. But WLMail does
understand "DeltaSync", so "HTTPMail" continues to function in Windows Live
Mail.

The pale/pastel interface takes a while to get used to..for some its a problem(visibility etc), for others not as significant..but
it still would be nice to have more user control.

As you know, many Hotmail subscribers used Outlook Express to
synchronise all of their Hotmail folders with the central server
(using the HTTP WebDav protocol). However, Microsoft
discontinued the HTTP WebDav protocol - so Outlook Express users
were obliged to switch to the Hotmail POP3 server - or use an
alternative mail client that supports the new, HTTP DeltaSync
protocol.
WLMail does support the new HTTP DeltaSync protocol, which would
allow you to synchronise your Hotmail folders (in the same way
that you used to do with Outlook Express). Consequently, you may
need to perform one final step to complete the migration from
Outlook Express.
I assume that WLMail has imported all of your previous mail
account details from Outlook Express. If so, WLMail will
continue to use the server settings from Outlook Express. For
the "other Hotmail account, which you've always had", you will
probably find that WLMail has imported details of the Hotmail
POP3 server. Or even worse, it might have imported details of
the HTTP WebDav server - which won't work at all.
Open WLMail. Scroll down to the Inbox folder for your old
Hotmail account and select all existing messages. Copy the
messages to the Inbox folder in "Storage Folders" (which you will
see, towards the end of your Folder list). That precaution
protects against the loss of messages that you might want to
keep.
Then, re-create your old Hotmail account in WLMail. (Click on
Tools / Accounts / Add... - and follow the account creation
wizard). WLMail will automatically supply the correct details
for the Hotmail HTTP DeltaSync server.
Once you have set up the Hotmail account in WLMail, you will be
able to download all of your folder details. Synchronise all
email accounts and check that all messages from your Hotmail
folders on the central server have downloaded successfully. You
may find that your previous use of the POP3 server has deleted
some messages you want to keep. If so, you should restore them
from the Hotmail Deleted Items folder to your Hotmail inbox.
Once you are satisfied that your old Hotmail account has
synchronised OK, you should delete the POP3 version from WLMail.
You will probably receive a warning that deletion of the account
you will lose all messages from your inbox. That is OK, because
you have previously copied the content of your Hotmail Inbox to
the separate inbox in your storage folders.

The software, like the Outlook Connector handles the http server.
It doesn't much matter what http server is imported, migrated, entered...WLM will use DeltaSync_V2.0 for all Hotmail accounts.
Even http:// will work....Enable logging, with just http:// in the server field, the log will show mail.live.com etc and DeltaSync
being used and any messages outbound and inbound will still be received and sent.

I was not aware of that latest development. Did Microsoft
introduce this enhancement with one of the 2009 releases (WLMail
v14.0.8064.206 or 14.0.8089.0726)?

During a selective private preview for Live Movie Maker, I created a separate Live ID for use on spare drive(laptop)downloading an
installing version 0726 of WLEssentials.(looks like about Aug 11 based on my posting properties...no one even noticed<g>).
I remember playing around with the DeltaSync_v2.0 server changing it to 3 then 9 and it worked on 0726, then pretty much forgot
about doing that until WebDAV ceased.
Once WebDAV was retired....the light finally clicked on, that if the server 3 or 9 worked, then it might not matter if the WebDAV
server was in use either. After reading a few posts 9/1 and after suggesting to correct the server if WebDAV was present, I was
able to verify it by substituting any of the former 3 WebDAV servers, and just about any http://<fill in>. Once verified, I posted
it a few times in this forum.
I don't know if this is permanent or not...but like the Outlook Connector it would be relatively easy for them to implement it at
their end or include in the software. They've obviously been able to determine the email client for some time(it would seem the
marketing folks would like to know what's being used<g>), and they probably wanted to know that same info(who's using what client)
when they started discussing the impact of WebDAV retirement a few years ago and even earlier when WebDAV ceased for free(non
grandfathered) Hotmail accounts.
MSN Premium software(MSn Explorer) would also fit somewhat in that same boat...with 9.6 being required(earlier versions used
WebDAV(thus why change or permit those when they could minimize client proliferation in the same stroke).
If I hear anything concrete thats permissible to pass on, I'll try to do so.
lol..the above is a perfect example of why beta testing with a closed group of 'winged' testers vs. not doing so with public users
may not always be the best group for testing Live software.....those testers disliked the WLE product's direction(integrated suite,
web interface, network etc) so much that they missed a fair share of the obvious impact on a sizeable population(one being OE and
Outlook WebDAV users with Hotmail accounts)...visibility and text only icons may be issues, but Contacts and Calendar with and
without a Live ID, migration/importing, and synchronization may very well be extremely more important(as the Live Team expected)
and be so for quite some time!
