I have Windows 7. Could you kindly tell me how to backup and restore Windows
Live Mail. I thought I read that emails are stored as .eml files, and not
.dbx files. Thanks in advance.

With OE, I would have recommended OEQB. With WLMail, I recommend this.

Static Email Backup
http://www.staticbackup.com/downloads.htm

Get the "Free" version for WLMail.

Sorry, I had to run out with the dog before I could finish my question. In
OE you could go to Options...Maintenance.....Store Folder and view the .dbx
files. Can you do the same thing with WLM? I followed the path
C:\Users\SHEANA\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail, but could not see
anything in the preview pane, although I set my folder options to show to "
do not hide, etc.". Before something bad happens I want to learn how to do
this backup and restore.

Bruce, I appreciate your effort to make this a simple process. However, I
would also like to look under the hood a little more, like I did with
Outlook Express. Is this even possible, or do I have to use a piece of
add-on software?

Tools | Options | Advanced | Maintenance | Store Folder will show you the
path to the store folder.

OK, I ran the path to the store folder and opened up the folder where all
things WLM are stored. What do you do once you get there. Thanks in advance.

Copy the entire Windows Live Mail folder. Copy the Contacts folder as
well.

While we're talking about backing up, I selected all 24 messages in my WLM
Inbox and dragged them into a folder on my desktop. They were saved with the
.eml extension. However, when I tried to drag them from the desktop folder
back into the WLM inbox, they open up a new email with all 24 emails as
attachments. Why can't I drag and drop them into WLM? Using the import
function in WLM, I pointed the program to the desktop folder with the
.eml's, and tried to import them that way. I got an error message saying the
program that does this was open and not available (or something to that
effect) and that no messages were found in that folder. Can you provide any
insight into this matter? Thanks in advance, and thank you Winston, for the
great link.

The Contacts folder is not in the Store folder.
The email folders are in the Windows Live Mail folder.
The contacts are in Windows Live Contacts folder. There is one folder for
the default contacts and two folders for each Live ID.

That's why I said to back it up separately.

Only if you have hotmail account, yes? I have a Live ID, but only pop my
mail and have only one folder only in the Contacts folder.

What Inbox..
Pop3, IMAP, Http(Hotmail account using DeltaSync server)

What happens if you drag one at a time to the account Inbox(not Quick Views All Inbox)

I tested it here(latest version of WLM)....create new folder on desktop, drag 24 messages to it from WLM...drag 24 back to a
variety of folders(Inbox for different accounts, user created folders in different accounts pop3 and http, etc) - no new message
created with attachments
- Sorry can't duplicate, unless I'm doing it differently than you(I only tested pop3 and http, not Imap)

I'm partial to the link..the site is mine <g>

That's the default Contacts folder(one)

If you log on with that Live ID to Windows Live in WLM, you'll have three folders since any Live ID has an online contacts and
calendar
- (i.e. the email account provider and setup in WLM[Live ID or not] and protocol used for that account[pop/http] isn't relevant)

It's a POP account, and I can drag one email at a time back from the desktop
folder to the WLM Pop Inbox ( my default account). But what if I had 600
messages? By the way, I successfully managed to use the import/export
functions within WLM.

You should guess the next question...How many can you drag without receiving the error...2, 3, 12, 23, take your pick..I did 34
before figuring I did enough to test the ability of drag and drop.
