I started MS Mail and found out it doesn't support HTTP. I read that I
should use Live Mail, and the info described it as a way to keep all your
email accounts in one place.
I tried multiple times to create a new account using my Lycos email address
etc. The application would throw an error at me while trying to d/l mail from
my server (auto entered by LiveMail as the DeltaSync address above.
It said my username or password were incorrect.
I triple checked by logging off and on to my lycos acct in IE. The username
that LiveMail put was my entire email address. I changed it to leave off the
@lycos.com and got a notice saying my username appeared to be incorrect. It
isn't.
Suffice to say that I haven't been able to get Live Mail to work. The only
reason I am interested is that I read Windows Mail 'learned' to identify
spam. I had hoped LiveMail used the same technology.
So, I have thus far wasted 2 hrs trying to get this thing to work and found
this message.
Can I created an account that handles my Lycos email account?
If so, how the heck do I get LM to work? My username and pw are both
correct, just not accpeted by LM.
As far as I can see, lycos.com mail is only accessible via POP3 and
SMTP if you have a premium account. The DeltaSync mechanism you're
trying to use only works with Hotmail. So you'll have to pay for
your account if you want to use a desktop mail client to access it.
The only alternative I can suggest is using something like FreePOPs
( http://freepops.org/en/ ) which works well with Yahoo and Hotmail
(in my experience) and many other webmail services as well (I'm
told).

Windows Live Mail (WLM) which is available for Windows XP, Vista and
Windows 7 supports POP3, IMAP and HTTP (DeltaSynch) protocols for
downloading mail.
Windows Mail (WM) which is available on Vista only supports POP3 and
IMAP only. No HTTP support of any kind.
Outlook Express (OE) which is available on XP and earlier (no Vista or
Windows 7) supports POP3, IMAP and HTTP (WebDAV).
The HTTP (WebDAV) was developed my Microsoft for their exclusive use in
Hotmail and MSN. Lycos is the only non-Microsoft mail service that I've
ever heard of using WebDAV. I have no idea how that came about.
Whether they licensed if from Microsoft or reverse engineered it.
Microsoft is migrating from WebDAV to DeltaSynch because it's much more
efficient with large message stores. At some point Microsoft will drop
support for WebDAV entirely. They tried to do that last year but ran
into a storm of complaints and delayed its demise.

"Windows Live Mail", the email client, works with any POP3, or IMAP4
account, as well as with Hotmail.

I am assuming that you have Windows Vista, and that your "MS Mail" is
actually, "Windows Mail" (the email client MS included with Windows Vista).
And that by "Live Mail" you really mean, "Windows Live Mail" (the client
downloaded from the Windows Live site). It would really help if you could
learn the actual MS nomenclature (given in the "Help About" box), instead of
inventing your own.

The problem is with Lycos Mail. They set up their accounts (U.K. only,
nearly as I can tell) to use MS' "WebDAV" for HTTPMail access.
MS has developed a new HTTPMail protocol: DeltaSync. This is included with
Windows Live Mail, but I am not sure about "WebDAV".
Nor am I certain about how Lycos is implementing the protocols. For now, all
that I can say is, if it doesn't work, Lycos will need to address it.

6th: the webmail addresses i need to use are:
https://webmail.socal.rr.com/
with alt of
https://webmail.roadrunner.com/
If this does not work for WLM, then WHY NOT?
[and hint, hint, hunt, could ms at least clarify 'includes'? and at least
provide some sort of error message?]
If it is 'supposed to' work, then what is the problem?
If does not work, is there any chance that it might in the future?
And who/what would it depend on?
[My situation: at home i use WLM (POP) to pull in all 10 of my roadrunner
email addresses. When not at home i must laboriously go to each of the 10
emails. Please, please, please let it be that WLM can use the HTTP addresses.
And if it can't, then WTH is with the misleading promises of being able to
get http mail into wlm.]
All help greatly appreciated. TIA

For a web mail account to work with Windows Live Mail, it needs to support
the "DeltaSync" protocol. I don't believe any web mail service, other than
Windows Live Hotmail, provides "DeltaSynch" support. So, no, Windows Live
Mail will not work with the web mail links you are trying to use. It is
highly unlikely that Road Runner will ever provide "DeltaSynch" for its web
mail server. I believe that Road Runner only offers POP3 access, other than
web email.
Http support is restricted to Hotmail accounts(Hotmail.com, Live.com, and Msn.com)

I'd be interested to learn where you read that WLMail will work with
other webmail services than Hotmail over HTTP. I suspect you
misunderstood what was written, but that's neither surprising nor
unusual considering how imprecise much MS marketing stuff is.
I think you'll have to use POP3 to access your rr.com accounts
through WLMail. The instructions will be in their FAQs, which seem
to vary depending on your location and provider.
This thread - now more than two years old - just refuses to lie down
and die. Please look at the dates of posts you respond to: when this
thread started, WLMail was still in beta and the current version was
12.0.1265. Much has changed since then.
