OK, I'm trying to install Windows Live Desktop Mail, Windows Live Writer and
other Live Products wtih WLInstaller at the same time on Windows Vista
Ultimate 32 Bit Edition. I was previously running, Mail, Messenger and Writer
and all was working fine. I just wanted to upgrade my Live Messenger 8.1 to
8.5 so uninstalled the previous products and tried to install new ones.
Whenever I try so, installer runs and say "Checking for installed
products..." and then installation stops with error "There was a problem
downloading....".
I tried many things but didnot work for me. I turned of my Firewall and
Antivirus, Cleared Internet Cache but it sucks at the same error. Can anybody
tell me what else should I try???
Thank You in Adcance...

Hello Aski,
Thanks for your reply. I already have the right installer but anyhow I tried
from the link you sent and got the same error. Any other setting or
workaround to get it working. (Remember previous version of Desktop mail
installed and worked correctly)
Thanks Again,
Rizwan aka RizwanSharp

Several times, I uninstalled all the suite in order to reinstall a other
language.
I recently carried it out sucessfully without data loss.

Yep, same problem here. We can install all apps EXCEPT for the Mail applet.
Tried this under XP-SP2 on our five workstations as well as under Vista
Ultimate on our six laptops. We are always getting the same error: “There was
a problem downloading …” This is after trying it over the past four days on
an hourly basis (using our optic fiber internet connectivity).

It really sucks. As much as we’d like to deploy this across the network, the
Live suite seems simply far too unstable at this point in time.

Going by previous installation issues of the Windows Live Mail Desktop
versions, this really does not bode well for future implementations. In fact,
it seems things are getting worse … Shame, really.

If anyone has a valid (as in tested and proven) work-around, I’d really like
to hear about it. But at this stage it seems these applets are simply
unproven puppies and MS is reverting to its old bag of tricks using the
public as guinea pigs - at the public’s expense!

Thanks Aski;

Yes we are aware of the discussion, but this does not resolve the download
issue which seems to be perhaps a MS server issue or perhaps the way the
downloader communicates.

MS needs to pull its socks up. The downloader, in many ways, is a good idea,
but they really need to get it working reliably ... and soon!

I am getting a similar problem when trying to install Windows Live Messenger.
For the latest version (8.5, I believe), I am directed to this page where I
am asked download WLinstaller.exe (2.28 mb). Most times I try downloading it,
everything is good until I reach 90 %, and then the download hangs (for the
other times, the download does not even start). I have the same problem
whether I am using the 32 or 64 bit version of Vista.
Now I don't know if the fact that I have not activated my copy of Vista
Ultimate has any incidence on the problem, but I am going to be changing some
parts in my computer soon, and I don't want to activate just yet.
For now, I was able to download the 8.1 version of Messenger here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=d78f2ff1-79ea-4066-8ba0-ddbed94864fc&displaylang=en
and it seems ok. I am however anxious to get the new version... not that I
absolutely need it, but for the principle :)

So to make a long story short, I have the same problem RizwanSharp has and
any help would be appreciated

Thank you

Thank you for taking the time to answering my query. I am however unfamiliar
with how to get to the thread you mention. Can you help me with this?

If you were using a newsreader client (such as WLMail) to post/read this thread, you could just click on the link to open the post. Since you are not using a newsreader to post/read this thread, you can copy the link and paste it into Internet Explorer's address field and hit Enter. That link should then open that post in WLMail if you have it set as your default news handler and if you have not deleted the Microsoft Communities news account.
In any case, the information that post provides is as follows:
> Download
> "http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v319990518/cabpool/mu_wlmail_ceeb0a518c16c65bca931900e77880ec36b3350e.exe"

> Then use a resource editor (http://www.wilsonc.demon.co.uk/d10resourceeditor.htm) to extract wlmail.msi from the exe

Peter,

Have you tried clicking on the news post embedded link with a different news
server besides this one as the default even when using a newsreader to
post/read this thread.

WLM should provide an error message that the message is expired or removed.
Clicking on details should provide further info
- 430 no such article found

- plus additional information(Configuration, Account(default), a WLM
Error ID, and Code

Whoa, I think if it has 'news:' as the first part of that link it works that
way. The way it is it just opens a new compose window with that address in
the To: address
