I'm trying to set up email in WML and import a lot of Outlook Express emails
into WML. I've followed all instruction here and elsewhere, dload .dbx to a
thimb drive from OE on the old PC and set up a folder for a series of .dbx on
the new PC with W7. I ask WLM to import messages and it says
"No messages can be found in this folder (altho a bunch of .dbx are sitting
there) or another appl is running that has the required files open."

WHy won't WLM recognize those .dbx files with all my emails?

Thanks.

Did you include Folders.dbx in your backup? An import will fail without
it.

Transferring data from Outlook Express to Windows Live Mail:

For messages:

Copy the *ENTIRE* OE message store folder to a flash drive. (Folders.dbx
must be included). Place this on the Desktop or other location on the
machine using WLMail. Open WLMail and: File | Import | Messages |
Microsoft Outlook Express 6 and point to where you saved it.

OE Message Store Location:

In OE: Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the
location of your Outlook Express files. Write the location down and
navigate to it in Windows Explorer or, copy and paste it into Start | Run.

In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable
Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options
Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View.

For Addresses:

Open the Address Book in OE and File | Export | Address Book (wab) and
save it to the Desktop. Copy to a flash drive. Place this on the Desktop
or other location on the machine using WLMail.

Open the Contacts list in WLMail, (Go | Contacts on the Menu Bar), and
File | Import | Windows Address Book (wab) and point to where you saved
it.

Note: If you use a CD or DVD instead of a flash drive, after placing on
the new machine you must remove the Read Only attribute in Properties
before you import.

Besides ensuring that the file 'folders.dbx' is present, make sure all the
.dbx files reside in a new folder that on your hard drive, and under your
Windows user profile, and none of the .dbx files have the Read Only attribute.

",Open WLMail and: File | Import | Messages | "

With reference to this.
When I go to file in Windows live mail, then to import I only get MS
internet explorer as the only folder to open.
No messages folder??
Can you advise as to what I should do?
Thank you.

Are you saying that after File, Import the option to import MESSAGES is
not available? Sounds like you are in your browser and not in the
Windows Live Mail program.

If you are getting the import for Messages, then the next dialog should
let you chose the format of Microsoft Outlook Express 6, Windows Live
Mail or Windows Mail. Once you choose Outlook Express 6 you should get
a dialog with a browse button to browse to the any folder on your PC to
say where the messages (DBX files) are.

Mike,

Yrs, that is what I am saying.
I go to Windows live messenger, then into my Hotmail account to Inbox.
The then go File to Import which opens a window only showing a button for MS
internet Explorer.
It does sound like a browser window but I am in WLM and in my Hotmail mail
program.
Any advice would be gratefully received since the MS forums will not answer
this query at all.

Yes that is what I am saying.
I enter WLM and go to my mail account (Hotmail), go to inbox then file to
import and then all I get is MS Internet Explorer as an option.
I understand you point about brwser but I do not see what I could be doing
wrong.
I have transfered my OE email many times as I have moved PC's so I know the
drill.
Any advice grastefully received.

Why are you opening the Inbox? Just open WLM and do File-Import-Messages

You need to use Windows Live MAIL, not MESSENGER.

I am now very confused.
When I originally downloaded Windows Live Mail, one of the first questions
it asked was whether I wished to download Messenger (as well as others).
Not Windows Live Mail.
After it has set up Windows Live Messenger there is no ikon for Windows Live
Mail, only the top right click thru for mail. wlsetup-web is the download I
have used.

Wlsetup-web.exe will install several of the Live products.
Run it again and select "Mail" to install Live Mail.

Dave,
Thank you for your answer but I have now carried out the wlsetup-web several
times. I have uninstalled all programs inclusding Mail, messnger etc etc then
I have used wlsetup-web to reinstall mail.
At no time in any of the many configurations I have trid can I get anything
other than Microsoft Internet Explorer to appear in the import box.
I have yet to see a messages folder or click thru in the import clickthru.
I am totally lost on this one.

Hi,

The Reason behind not recognition of your emails with WML is that both (outlook Express and WLM) mail clients are different and you have to convert .DBX files into .EML (Windows Live Mail supportive file format), afterward you successfully can import OE .dbx emails into Windows 7. You can Prefer DBX Converter software.
It also supports me to do same task, when i opted it from Google and found excellent result instantly.

Not necessary.

WLM can import OE's DBX files without the need of additional software.

If WLM is installed on the same machine as OE, the data is automatically
migrated.

If WLM is installed on a different machine, copy the entire OE Dbx store
to the new pc, external drive, or usb thumb drive and point the WLM
importer to that location.

No third party software necessary. In fact, the two are not that much
different in fact much of the code amongst WLM, OE and Vista's Windows
Mail is common and written or adopted by the same MSFT Team.
