Insert key?

Hi, Sardini.

Usually it is a simple keystroke toggle, not a setting in a program. Most
keyboards have an "Insert" key, often located near the "Delete" key.

Does your keyboard have an "Insert" key? What happens if you press that
ONCE?

If a key on the keyboard doesn't work, it would seem a new keyboard
would be the usual next step. No ?

Had the same problem once before and forgot how to stop it, click off the insert key on the keyboard, that took care of it. No more over writing in gmail.

I have the same issue. My insert key works because normally I can toggle insert mode with it. I'm hitting some hot-key combo or something because the block-cursor covers the letter and typing anything replaces letters. Th only way I can get this to reset is to close my browser and reopen it. It only seems to happen with Google-Chrome.

I'm having the same issue with Chrome. All my other apps work and play nicely toggling modes with the Insert key, but Chrome is getting stuck in overstrike mode no matter what I do... it is VERY annoying.

It's definitely specific to Chrome. Somehow the highlight gets turned on which toggles an overwrite when clicking the mouse in the middle of text when editing. Clicking the insert key does not turn it off. Only happens in Chrome. Never in Firefox or Opera browser. With each update Chrome gets worse and worse. I first noticed this problem in Yahoo email.

My "insert" key also didn't work. So I turned off my "number lock" on the number keypad and used the 0 as the "insert" button - "b/c it says "ins" on the 0 key - and used that to toggle. That worked and turned off the insert/overtype function on my gmail.

I've just discovered this issue, just recently upgraded to chrome beta 46.0, issue not on all chrome use, happening right now in gmail hangouts, while at same time i'm typing in chrome here with no issue of overwrite. Tried several ways to turn off overwrite mode in hangouts, none worked. going to restart chrome to see if that does it.

This just happened to me in Google Sheets, and my keyboard has an Insert key, but it was not working... when typing in the "formula bar," Insert did nothing, and I was stuck in replace (overtype) mode. The trick was to double-click a CELL to put the cursor there. THEN the Insert key toggled insert/replace as expected, and the change to normal insert mode carried over to the formula bar.

Super confusing!

expect it to work for Chrome on Youtube.

Many suggestions, most probably helped someone at some point. For me it was the type in cell and not formula bar of google spreadsheets.

However, since none of the questions or suggestions ever actually mention Live Mail, except for those complaining that people are asking questions and giving suggestions related to things that are not Live Mail, Perhaps the thread could be moved to a more appropriate place, so the next person doesn't have to search quite as hard for these 'undocumented features'?

Thank you SO much. Googling this was nearly useless "Press your Insert key!" Yeah! I *tried* that, and it did nothing. Finally, someone who has the answer!
It turns out my laptop's numpad's 0 functions as the 'insert' key too, when the numlock is off, so that's how I was accidentally enabling and disabling this from time to time.

Here's what I found works for me - turn OFF the number lock on the 9-key pad (side number keypad on your keyboard) and push the "0" key (mine has "ins" on the 0 key). Once you do that, the cursor should start blinking again to show you are out of the overwrite mode and then you can put your number lock back on and use the 9-key pad as usual. Mine always turns on and off when I don't realize that I have accidently turned off the number lock and then I try to type a number.

2017 and I had the issue for the first time. The "number lock" off, and then "0" on my keypad fixed it. Thanks!!!

I know how to turn it off by pressing Insert, and it works, but it's annoying that I have to do that. Why does it even turn on in the first place? What key combination am I accidentally pressing that is causing the stupid pointless overtype mode to turn on?
What's the point of overtype anyway?

You're accidentally turning it on when you tap the Backspace Key and
brushing against the Insert Key.

Make sure it's in the position you want and then just ad a few drops of
Super Glue.

Holy crap! just had this issue for the first time, and out of 8 websites, including Google Docs Help pages, this is the first place that had this answer, which actually worked. This is ridiculous that Google still has this issue. This should be a bug that needs fixing. you shouldn't have to click in a specific location for the overwrite to enable/disable. There isn't even a notification on screen when it is enabled. I thought I had accidentally clicked something in a drop down menu and was trying to find it to no avail. :(

Nothing else worked until I found this.

To Summarize:

1. You have to figure out which key or keys on your keyboard toggle insert mode on and off. Some keyboards have this labelled. Most keyboards that have a numpad use the "0" key as insert toggle when NumLock is off.

2. Not every text location, in google/chrome/gmail/drive spreadsheets responds to this keystroke. In gmail, do it in the body of the gmail. In Spreadsheets, double click in a cell, and then do it there.

THANK YOU!! I know your post is old, but being unable to turn off overtype was driving me bonkers, and this worked! Obviously the Insert (which is also the "0" on the number pad) wouldn't toggle because the number lock was on. I don't know why this didn't occur to me. I tried everything to get the stupid overtype off, and all the while this simple solution was all it took. Again, thank you!!

If insert doesn't work I found that double clicking a word to highlight that word allowed insert to work. It didn't visibly change anything when I hit insert but when I clicked away from the highlighted word after hitting insert the cursor was back to normal.

Why does Microsoft even build in such an annoying function that so frequently seems to be activated? Serious question: Are there people out there who say, "Oh I love how it overwrites text and doesn't allow me to insert something new."

Yeah, Microsoft sucks.

Have you tried smearing some of your shit on your keyboard so that your fingers won't go near the keyboard?  That way you can avoid over-typing.

Worth a try because nothing ever worked so far since 2009 when this thread started.
