Whenever I use Windows Live Mail to check my IMAP server I get an error
message after a while of inactivity.

"Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity."

Isn't there a way I can prevent this? When I use Outlook 2007, Thunderbird
or any other mail client I never get this message.

What does the rest of the error message say. You miss the most crucial part.

Make sure your antivirus is not configured to scan email.

Thomas,

This is a known bug we are tracking. The bug is most apparent when
connecting to servers that have short default timeouts. If you have access,
you can try changing the timeout limit on the server (I don't know if your
particular server supports this). This won't fix the problem, but it would
hopefully lessen its effect on you.

Thanks for letting us know,
-Kevin Barnes

I will try that. Thanks.
Is there any information I can provide which would help in the correction of
this bug?

Thanks for the feedback Kevin,
Fyi..it also occurs occasionally on this server(msnews.microsoft.com)with the server advanced settings timeout set to maximum.

We know enough about this bug that we can reliably reproduce it, so I don't
think we need any more information from you at this time.

Thanks Thomas,

If you need assistance on the matter, you should be looking at the IMAP RFC
2177 pertaining to the IDLE command.

Also, in comparison to Other IMAP Mail clients, Outlook Express and Windows
Live Mail DOES NOT issue NOOP commands every 5 minutes and therefore the mail
server does not think the connection is alive anymore.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMAP_IDLE

RFC 2177
" The server MAY consider a client inactive if it has an IDLE command
running, and if such a server has an inactivity timeout it MAY log
the client off implicitly at the end of its timeout period. Because
of that, clients using IDLE are advised to terminate the IDLE and
re-issue it at least every 29 minutes to avoid being logged off.
This still allows a client to receive immediate mailbox updates even
though it need only "poll" at half hour intervals.

Any news on this?
Am I correct thinking this is the same issue as with the Vista Windows Mail
client?

I'm running a quite large email service and we get lots of reports about
users with Windows Vista Mail getting exactly the same error message as
Thomas Thomassen posted.
Tests show that running the client against our local load balancer gives
this error but not when running directly against our email servers.
This isn't reproduceable with "any" other client. I haven't tested with WLM
yet.

First time starting Windows Vista Mail and retrieving the email works fine.
The session will however emidiatly be set in TIME_WAIT and if you try to
retrieve the email again (within a short period)
the client will have lost the session and throws the error. It will continue
to trhow the error without trying to establish a new session.

I'd like to know if this is the same known issue and if you think this will
be fixed soon?

Thanks.

Sorry, I'm not an IMAP expert, having specialized in POP issues.
A Microsoft rep did post here a while back that version 14 of WLM
contains some fixes for Gmail IMAP compatibility. Windows Mail
and versions of WLM prior to version 14 may well have IMAP
compatibility bugs.

Thomas,

We now do a better job of keeping our long-living IMAP connections alive and
detecting when they have been closed more quickly. It is still possible for
the errors you are seeing to appear (and we are still tracking this), but
these errors have been reduced quite a bit, at least in my personal
experience. Unfortunately, this fix won't be released until Wave 4.

Thanks for using Windows Live Mail,
-Kevin

I'm trying to stay with Live Mail but about every 2 weeks I get the error
described in this thread. The only recovery is to have my ISP restart their
IMAP server (which they graciously do but they won't do it forever...)
Besides, my wife (the user) gets on my case every time it happens. Help?

This will be fixed in Wave 4? What is Wave 4 and when is it? Searching
Microsoft.com doesn't provide any info...

Thanks,
Mike

Sorry.
The only info on your issue is noted in Kevin's earlier response..whether or not that mentioned fix will resolve your entire
problem will only be known once Wave 4 is released. No date for Wave 4's release has been released.

I had 800CCC0F error code with Windows Mail Live. What I did I opened
Advanced tag on Connection Settings and unchecked "This server requires an
encrypted connection (SSL)" on Incoming server (POP3) and "This server
requires an encrypted connection (SSL)" on Outgoing server (SMTP) checkboxes.
After that it went through.

So what you're saying it that you had the incorrect settings for your
unnamed server and by entering the correct settings, the problem went
away. Makes sense. Not every server uses the same settings so this is not
a fix for everyone.
