I've already associated the .doc file type with Microsoft Word in the control
panel, but that hasn't helped. I've also gone under "set your default
programs" in the control panel, but I am not seeing any of the Microsoft
Works programs show up in the program list.

The error message I receive in Live Mail is "The file does not have a
program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a
program, or if one is already installed, create an association in the default
programs control panel."

I can open up the file if I save it to my disk first, but I cannot open it
from Live Mail. I have no problems with .xls or .pdf.

Using: Windows 7, Microsoft Live Mail, Microsoft Works Word Processor. New
computer.

Save the attachment to your HDD. Right click on it and Open With | Choose
Program. Select MS Word and then check the box: Always use this program to
open this kind of file. This should enable you to open these attachments
in the future. You may need to reboot.

Does your version of MS Works include Word or only the Works proprietary word processor.

Your statement is contradictory in that in one place you say you use
Word, and in another place you say you use the Works word processor.
If your copy of Works included Word, have a look at this article:
http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/232/1/Unable-to-open-DOC-attachments-from-Windows-Mail.html

That fix was developed for Windows Mail on Vista computers, but is also
known to work with Windows Live Mail on Vista computers. But I don't know
if the author has updated his fix so that it works in Windows 7.

Have we or anyone ever figured out why this breaks for some people and not others ....and why some can open doc/docx files in WM
and WLM in Vista and Win7 when Word is installed when WM(Vista) or WLM(Vista/Win7) are the default or not the default email clients
without breaking something ?

No, I've never seen a logical explanation as to why this occurs.

I have the same issue with WLM. The only thing I can add is that if I log
onto my mail account at hotmail.com, I can open DOC file without any problem.

So did you try the fix to which I posted a link?

I attempted to install the fix but it would not run. It only works on Vista.
I am on Windows 7.

Thanks for your response. Apparently the author of that fix has not yet
updated it for Windows 7.

Do you know what the fix does? Surely this will tell us what is broken / the
cause of this problem. The fix still has not been updated and the problem
persists. Is anybody working on a logical purposeful solution?

Any time I suggest a diagnosis I get ignored. Perhaps they can at least
just drag the attachment to wherever they think it should open? ; )

I have the same problem using open office and live mail. As an alternative I downloaded Opera and run it parallel to Windows Live email. I discovered I do not have the problem using Opera and I?m pleasantly surpriced with the integrated functionality and the haslle free opening of the attachments in Openoffice.
