But it goes on to say "after the 3rd reply."

Bruce, have you ever looked at the reg key HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\Reply Count? Mine's gigantic, and I've *never* clicked 'Reply' three times. I wonder what it's for.

I don't have that key either. I don't think that key is created until after
you enable that option in the GUI.

I thought I had it turned off, too, but I was wrong. That key of mine contains thousands of values, each a unique e-mail address, with data for each consisting of a 240-character string of base64-encoded binary data. Lord knows what it means, but it looks like a colossal waste of space. I think I'll turn it off again...

[This happens all the time. I adjust a setting to test something, get all excited about the results and start writing about them ... and quite forget to restore the setting again. Anno Domini, I suppose.]

Press the Alt key to enable the menu. The Alt key acts as toggle.
To enable it permanently, click the downward triangle on the middle square icon found on the upper right or the WLM toolbar then
scroll down and select show menu bar.

What does whited-out mean ?
After clicking send page in your browser(IE) and email composition window opened and it was empty ?
Did the blank message have an attachment with an file extension htm ? The attached htm file is the page being sent.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\Reply Count

Present and accounted for on Vista Sp2, though no where the quantity as yours (mine has 20 hex[32 decimal])

GUI = Graphical User Interface

The system which allows you to interact with the program and/or operating system

In the case of the WLM GUI...it is what you see and use when you open WLM.

I have this key in W7 - 11 entries although I haven't a clue who some of
them are or how any of them got in it - no rhyme or reason - some are NG
regular responders (whom I've never emailed and the addresses are fake ones
anyway), some are people I do know, others are emails I don't recognize at
all.

What setting are you talking about? One that populates this key?

Are you using IE's Send Page / Link option? You have to use the "special"
set program defaults feature.

Start - Default Programs - "Set Program Access and Computer Defaults" -
Select the tiny "double-down" arrow on the far right of "Custom" - I have
selected "Use my current email program" select AND the "Enable access to
this program" checked.

[Tools >] Options > Send: 'Automatically put people I reply to in my address book after the third reply'. That's the only one I can imagine might affect the contents of that key, but why it should require so much data to count to three escapes me.

Oh, yes I use that setting - but I don't think it accounts for the info in
that registry key - at least, not in my case. Like I said, I have no idea
where most of it originated, certainly I would not have "replied 3 times" if
I don't even know them !! And I think if I sent certain NG regulars 3
replies they would have blasted me for breaking NG etiquette (no direct
emailing) !! But I don't have much to worry about like you do :-)

If you want to confirm the purpose of that registry key, uncheck that
setting in the GUI, then delete (or rename) that registry key.
My guess is that the registry key won't be recreated until you enable
the "Automatically put people..." setting.
