How do i close my hotmail/live/live ID account

you people are nuts, or at least you making me nuts, leave it to MS to have
me going in circles attempting to close this account. click close account in
live (whatever that is), after 10 minutes trying to find it, then prompts
you to close hotmail first, do that, then still says can't close, click close
email again, reactivates hotmail/live. Did the same person who thought you
should press the start button to shut down design this ____. Man would I like
to talk to bill, but I know he feels my pain, when he tested this pile of
fail out, nice looking website, to bad it does not work. does not even auto
save drafts properly, lost draft when clicked "save draft" then prompts for
browser upgrades,on a fully upgraded browser, hope all of you enjoyed your
bonuses for a job well done, even the new yahoo mail works better, what a
confusing mess, windows live, hotmail, WFT are you thinking, please forward
this to bill... What do I have to do make a phone call on Monday, to get this
account closed. i hope you did not work overtime on making this cluster ____

Now let start on "Help Central" while in "Live account help central".
Search for close account, number one search result is "You can’t close your
account or your child's account" Nice at least they new I was going to have
a problem. click that, because instructions to close account not listed as
an option, get the circle jerk listed above. I know this is not anyone here
fault, the people at the top figured out that offering 26 useless products,
that a PHD could not figure out to use them all, was a great idea. To much
S^%t throw against the wall, well it all fell off and left a pile of do do on
the floor. Nice picture of scuba divers, again WTF. Sure must be nice to
have 4 names for hotmail, windows live, windows hotmail, windows live
hotmail, live ID, privacy policies that are to complicated for a PHD.
useless help central, no wonder so many people work at MS. Lets start on
Vista, All I can say besides fail at making a super program, is it is real
nice they added a bunch of features that should have been in XP, because
right now I have to use free tools from 3rd party vendors for the same thing,

It would help if you informed the type of account(Hotmail free, Hotmail Plus, Msn Premium, Msn Premium secondary account, child
account) and whether or not any other Live services are in use(Messenger, Spaces, Calendar, SkyDrive, linked ID's) etc..

Generically answering your question..delete content from other Live Services first, close your then logon to account.live.com,
click on 'Settings' in the left hand pane, then click on 'Close your Live ID account'. You will need to reenter your password to
close your account. The long hand instructions are below.

Click the "Close My Account" button.
You will either see a "Confirmation of Closed Account" or a "Signing Out"
screen.
If it is the "Confirmation of Closed Account" screen you are done.
Otherwise {
On the "Signing Out" screen, just click the "Done" button. This is the
last step. The next screen says

Your stored messages and contact list will be

Do not sign in or access the account for 120 days. If you have second
thoughts just sign in to the account at the Hotmail or Live portal.

Thanks for the help from the volunteers in this MS discussion group. I only
posted the long winded complaint/question above, in the hopes that a MS
developer/employee would see my complaint. I also was looking for a way to
close my live.com email account and and also my live.com account (live
id?)account.

Starting fresh, and following the directions given, I get the same result. I
can close my email address, but not my live id. The way the website is setup,
it appears you can close both, but it can't be done. This leads me to believe
that irregardless of the information given, I must wait 120 days, without
signing into hotmail/live for my live id to lapse.

Please tell me if I am wrong, but only if you have time...

The reason for closing my account is due to the save draft/browser upgrade
bug, that I described in the first post, it actually happened to me twice...

I don't understand your problem. You have to wait 120 days. That's because
the Microsoft servers are extremely slow to take up changes, ;^) and to give
people with second thoughts a second chance. You don't really want to give
up your access to excellent live.com services, now do you? Once you get over
your little temper tantrum, you will be signing up again as if nothing ever
happened. ;^)

Follow the procedure presented earlier
Close the account and thereafter ignore it.
If you were worried about someone using/hacking the account it would have been better to put a strong password on the account prior
to closing.
Try using the account in 210 days..it should be locked out for good.
Do not test it prior to that and ensure that after saving any messages to a separate location(folder on hard drive, jump drive, cd,
external drive, spare drive, floppy disk)you have that account removed from any email software to prevent using that account and
any chance of reactivation.

It is what it is....at this stage, why you closed it is no longer important.

To add to what ...winston says, if you navigate to any Windows Live page and
the password has been cached for this user, you may inadvertently generate
activity on the account. So for that reason put on a strong password and
click "No" to any requests by your browser to save it. You will have to use
the new password at least once to confirm closing the account, and that may
generate a request by the browser to save it.

It's awful, isn't it? I had no trouble whatsoever closing a Google
Groups/Gmail account. Fwiw, I did not get the "you must cancel all your
billing services first" page when I closed a Hotmail account.

Try the following page. If it doesn't work then I suggest abandoning the
account.

To abandon the account do the following. Erase alternate email address,
secret question and everything that could help you log in to the account
again. Delete all mail messages in Hotmail. Type a long sequence of
characters that you will not remember into Notepad, do not look, copy to
clipboard. Change your Windows Live password to this new sequence, pasting
it into both boxes on the new password page. Log out. Forget about it.

I want to close my hotmail account, and I was told i need to close my xbox
live account first..

I did not realize I had an xbox live account even open, especially given I
do not own an xbox.

i called xbox live billing and customer service - both referred me to each
other to actually close the account..

so the link is not all that I (we) need..

we want to close the account(s) and cannot..

please help..

my fletche...@hotmail.com account was hacked.. leading me to want to
cancel in the first place.. I have reset my password and still cannot close
the account.. if you have a way to do it without another link or phone call
to the Philippines to either the billing or customer service departments, I
am very interested..

Hello Winston, While your suggestions sound really good, just wanted you to
know I have tried this with the "3" Live Mail accounts I have, but it hasn't
worked for me. I can't get or receive mail either for that matter, and most
important because I'm 'locked into these accounts' I also can not use the
'Page By & Link By Page E-Mail' features, because of my Live Mail account (I
keep getting messages like: Internet Explorer Security Alert, Program wil
open outside of protected mode). I just want to end ALL of this and move on
but don't know where else to turn any more. Microsoft ought to be ashamed of
themselves as far as I'm concerned, as how can these programs be started,
with NO solutions like this being resolved?

If the intent is to close the account why would getting or receiving mail be necessary.
No one is locked into any free email account. Obtain a new, notify your contacts, stop using the old.

Page by and Link By Page features are IE options, not Hotmail, not Live ID account) and a function of Windows and IE being configured properly to use the default email account.

Two step process (deactivation and subsequent closure)

Apparently replied to a old thread since the subject references Hotmail,
Live, and Live ID (all deprecated terms due to rebranding Hotmail as
Outlook.com and Live and Live ID as Microsoft services and Microsoft
Account)

i.e. your submitted link to information present on a non-MSFT service
has nothing to do with closing an account.

MSFT accounts (Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, Live.com, Msn.com, and 3rd
party registered MSFT accounts) close options are available via the
account's settings under the subtopic titled 'Security & password'.
