My son and I have been getting quite a lot of emails from a company in China
and they seem to be using his name but I do not think that they are sending
them from his computer.
I tried to find the source of the messages and get this:- Unable to
download GetMessageSource.aspx from sn130w.sntl30.mail.live.com
Does anyone know how to trace this and then get our ISPs to stop it
altogether?
Maybe hotmail or live mail should be stopping it.
Thank you

Tracing the true source of a spam email requires a very sophisticated analysis.
I delegate that chore to SpamCop: http://spamcop.net.

If the From address is always the same, you can add it to Blocked Senders.
If not, find some other aspect that those emails have in common, the
create a message rule (Tools, Message Rules, Mail...).

Thank you Gary , he can do that OK but my problem is slightly different;
emails are coming in (they get marked as spam) supposedly from my son; they
have his correct email address, lets say <s...@hotmail.co.uk> and while I
could block these I would also block out any that did come from him.
He had this same problem about 4 years ago and changed both his hotmail
account and his supanet account.
I can pick up the string of letters that identify the incoming emails but I
do not think that WLM or hotmail allow me to use these for blocking.
Thanks again.

Is your Hotmail account in Windows Live Mail set up using the HTTP protocol
or the POP protocol? With the former, filtering can only be done at the server,
with some minimal user blocking options. With the POP protocol you can use
all of Windows Live Mail's message rules, such as filtering on specific words
in the Subject line or message body.

It's weird that you would get spam from your son's email address. It is more
common to have your own address in the from lime, or some random or fake
address. This strongly suggests that his account, or computer has been
compromised. I'm guessing that others who were in his address book are
having an experience like yours. He should change his Hotmail password, and
scan his PC for infections,

In the mean time, you might want to mark the errant emails as spam/junk from
Hotmail's web interface... hopefully Hotmail would learn to distinguish
between the fake and legitimate mailings. By the way... if you move to
California, you'll be able to bring legal action against imposters such as
this one...

Thanks again; my server is the post office and I understand they use POP for
incoming mail.

Not really. E.g. the IP address he has may have been used by a spammer or
the range of IP addresses temporarily blacklisted, etc. The same thing
happens sometimes to my brother's messages to our mother. It can show up
in the headers where the undesirable tagging starts, e.g. the routing the
messages take can make a difference too.

It is not at all clear to me what "my server is the post office" means.
I asked which protocol. You find that out by going to Tools, Accounts,
select that account, Properties, Servers. Look for a line near the top
of that screen that says "My incoming server is a ______ server."

Sorry Gary but I am making no progress. I can find tools etc as you say in
my Outlook 2007 mail account but in WLM and Hotmail I cannot find any
reference to "tools, accounts etc,". If I go into tools there I can only
find a reference to contacts.
I know that my server works with POP3 and SMTP.
I now have Hotmail. WLM and Outlook delivering my son's emails (supposed as
well as genuine) into the junk folder and that should be safe enough.
Thanks again for all the help.

My response applied only to Windows Live Mail. If you don't see the
menu bar (which has Tools on it) press the Alt key first.
You can also use the Menus shortcut to select a permanent display
of the menu bar (at the loss of some screen real estate).

Gary, thanks again; sorry for the delay but this newsgroup dropped from
msnews.microsoft.com and I have just found it again.
By using the alt key as you say I can now see that I am getting via HTTP.

That means you can only use the blocking/filtering available on the
Hotmail website. As I said in my first reply, those features are very
minimal, and they don't include being able to filter on specific words.

Incidentally, Microsoft no longer supports this newsgroup.
Future requests for help with Windows Live Mail should be posted
to the Windows Live Mail forum:
http://www.windowslivehelp.com/forums.aspx?productid=15
