My old account fran...@hotmail.com is hacked and used by some people to
send inappropriate message to my contacts, even though I had deleted all of
them. So I hope to resolve the issue by applying a new live account and then
close the old. However, I only managed to get the first task done, I got a
new live account, but I do need to close the fran...@hotmail.com asap. Your
help is much appreciated.
Regards,
Frank

What happened when you tried to close the old account?

Are you sure a hacker has used the account to send inappropriate
messages to your contacts? I ask the question, because it is
very easy for spammers to forge the sender's email address on
outgoing emails.

The "inappropriate messages" might not have come from from your
hotmail account. Consequently, I recommend that you use the
webmail interface to check the content of the sent mail folder.
The presence (or absence) of junk mail in the sent mail folder
will provide an indication whether the messages really have come
from your account.

Upon the assumption that the "fran...@hotmail.com" account is
still open, sign in via the webmail interface - and change the
password. That should prevent unauthorised third parties from
using your account to send messages.

You should also consider the possibility that your computer might
be infected with a Trojan or other malicious software, which
could have harvested the content of your address book / contacts
list. Consequently, I recommend that you download and run at
least two anti-spyware programs, such as Malwarebytes (from
www.malwarebytes.org) and SuperAntiSpyware (from
www.superantispyware.com/index.html).

Fyi...if messages are being sent from your Hotmail type address(hotmail.com, live.com, msn.com), it does not necessarily indicate
the account was hacked.
Your email address may have been harvested from use on the net, your system or another persons address book(containing your contact
info).

Spammers and marketers falsify messages headers to appear as if the message was sent from your address(when in fact they may not).

If you feel your account was actually compromised, Change your password
- logon at account.live.com and click change password. Ensure you provide a secret question and alternate email address.

If you wish to start over, create a new account then cancel the prior Hotmail account and the Live ID.

To create a new account
https://signup.live.com/signup.aspx

You must cancel the Hotmail account and close the Live ID to completely remove access to all Windows Live Services.

Both of these require the ability to logon.

Close Live ID
https://account.live.com/CloseAccount.aspx

Regarding Live ID closure:
<qp>
Important: To delete personal information you have given to Windows Live or other Microsoft services, or any other site where you
use this sign-in name, sign in to those sites and delete the information before you close your account. You will not be able to
access those sites after your account is closed.
When your account is closed:
Your credentials (e-mail address and password) will be permanently deleted.
Your Windows Live registered information will be permanently deleted.
You won't be able to sign in to Windows Live or other Microsoft services, or any other site where you use this sign-in name.
Some information you may have provided to Microsoft will not be automatically deleted. To learn how to access personal information,
see the Microsoft Privacy Statement.
You will lose access to your contacts in Windows Live Messenger and in Microsoft e-mail (Windows Live Hotmail).
</qp>

If you can not logon then you must work through the online Hotmail support forum to achieve the same end result.

Unfortunately there is no way to control these hackers. If they find your
email address in some public place or accessible website, they can start
using it. It does not mean they are actually sending from your account
(i.e. they did not login to Hotmail with your user id and p/w) - they just
did a "text edit" of the address that appears on the emails they send out.
The only thing you can do is be very careful where you post your email
address and if you use alot of social sites, internet surf and fill out
online applications, and such, consider setting up another freebie email
address to use for just that purpose. Keep your "real address" confidential
to only your family, friends, and businesses which you hold in high regard
(like utility companies, your bank, property manager, your ISP, etc.). That
should also cut down on SPAM hitting your "real address".

Natasha...
Same answer as provided Frank over a month ago applies to closure. Once an account is closed, that does not mean it wasn't
previously harvested by spammers for use as a sending address when forging the headers of the original sending source address.
