I have never used Windows Live but it appears that I will need to use a
program package called Windows Live Essentials to get functionality not
included in Windows 7 (which I am about to install).

Mail :
Does Windows Live Mail support a POP3 interface? I am not interested in
Web mail; I want my mail stored on my PC.

Do I need a Hotmail account for any reason and what is the Windows Live
ID required for?

I am assuming good export/import functionality exists between Vista Mail
and Live Mail -- is that correct?

I have exported all my email files to a separate drive prior to
installing Windows 7. Should I just move over to Live mail prior to Windows
7 installation?

Calendar : Is a calendar included in this package and can it also be stored
locally?

WLMail does pop3 with each account having its own Inbox, Drafts, Sent Items,
Junk e-mail, and Deleted Items.

You can register a non Hotmail email address as a Live ID. If you login
with a Live ID, contacts and calendar are synced with online contacts and
calendar.

You can import from WM.

Not signing in, WLMail will use local contacts and calendar.

Yes, WLMail is a full-featured POP client.

No, you don't need a Hotmail account and a Live ID is not required. There
are, however, some advantages in having a Live ID and signing in with it
when using WLMail. Some of them are explained here:
http://emailsupport.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!5D6F5A79A79B6708!4764.entry

> I am assuming good export/import functionality exists between Vista

Yes, for both messages and contacts.

> I have exported all my email files to a separate drive prior to
> installing Windows 7. Should I just move over to Live mail prior to
> Windows 7 installation?

You may find it advantageous to do so. This will create a message store
populated with your account details and saved WinMail messages. You could
then back up this message store to your separate drive before installing
Win7 and then point your new installation of WLMail to that store. It would
also ease migrating your contacts from Windows Contacts to Windows Live
Contacts.

> Calendar : Is a calendar included in this package and can it also be
> stored locally?

Yes. A calendar is integrated into WLMail. Again, you may wish to consider
the advantages of associating it with a Live ID (which does not have to
involve Hotmail) so that you can access it remotely.

When you install Windows Live Essentials, be sure to select only those bits
of it you want. The default options involve installing all sorts of
applications that you may not be interested in.

Thank you for the information. I have installed Windows Live and it seems
to be working pretty well. It imported my Vista Windows Mail and Calendar
store automatically during install. Question about the calendar: I haven't
found how to set reminders and reminder information does not seem to have
been imported. How do I do this?

You only get reminders if you sync your calendar by logging in.
When you say Windows Live, it can refer to Messenger, Hotmail, Mail....

OK, yes I figured that out. Not sure of the rationale for not having
reminders when not logged in. What happens if you have lost your Internet
connectivity temporarily?

Once a reminder is set in a Calendar entry for a logged on Live ID, one has the option to set the reminder options(re-occurrence
frequency and time).

The Alert(Reminder) method is configured on the WLM Calendar/Tools Menu/Deliver my reminders to..
- if logged on in WLM the web Alert screen will load in IE..one then determines the reminder deliver options(Messenger, Email,
Mobile Device)

Fyi...the web interface(accessed in IE, is a bit more flexible and has a better Options screen(Calendar.live.com, upper right click
on Options/More Options)

Yes.

You do not need a Hotmail account. The Windows Live ID is used to sign in to
the Windows Live Services for synchronization of Contact lists and Calendar,
and perhaps other Windows Live Services. You do not need to use a Windows
Live ID to use Windows Live Mail. Just skip the step where it asks for a
Windows Live ID as you set up WLMail. You can always go back and add one
later if you change your mind.

> I am assuming good export/import functionality exists between Vista

I had no trouble importing from MS Outlook Express; should be the same, or
similar with Windows Mail. Probably easiest to install WLMail on the Vista
computer, then back up WLMail and restore it in Windows 7. I've not done
that, myself, but somebody here surely has.

> I have exported all my email files to a separate drive prior to

I think that is wisest. Then you can just back up from WLMail on Vista, and
restore on Windows 7.

> Calendar : Is a calendar included in this package and can it also be

I believe you need a Windows Live ID to use Calendar. You should be able to
set up a Windows Live ID using any email address. I have one set up for my
hobby domain.

Profile(start point to set permission), Account settings(password, secret question, time zone etc), and optionally, Messenger, are
three that immediately come to mind.

Calendar reminders uses three delivery methods: Messenger, email, mobile
device.
Outlook Calendar gives reminders on your computer. It would be a good
feature for the default WLMail calendar.

The calendar events have to be on the online calendar to get reminders. You
do not have to be logged in to get the alerts.

Winston,
When I am logged on in WLM, I still have to login in IE to get the web Alert
screen to load in IE.
Could not having Messenger running affect this?

That of course is the fundamental flaw of cloud nine computing!

So the price of high-technology is loss of functionality. So far this
calendar simply is not doing it for me. No alerts to the desktop; no snooze
function (I REALLY depend on that one). Right now calendar delivers a
single beep which I'll probably miss. So I have to send myself an email or
an IM! Criminitly!

The Sign In Assistant will prompt to logon.
WLMsgr, even with 'Allow auto-sign when connected to the Internet' shouldn't impact since the source of the redirection to the web
Alert config page is from WLM not WLMsgr.
