Cannot send email from an open Word doc using WLM

I read a lot about other people that have this issue and I still didn't
find a solution for it. It used to work fine with the Beta WLM version.
I use Office 2007 and when I have a document opened I click send to
Email and it givves me the error: "Logon failed. You must log on to
Microsoft Exchangeto access your address book. Error code" Unspecified
Error". I have tried to play with the settings, and weird... sometimes
it works as a "one time" thing. But after that it doesn't... Any ideas?

Open the Default Programs applet, which you can access either from
the Start menu or via the Control Panel, then click the first item:
"Set your default programs."
After a few seconds, a list of programs comes up. Click on "Windows
Live Mail". If it doesn't respond with "This program has all its defaults"
then fix it by clicking on the option indicated by the first green arrow.
Microsoft Office programs have a bad habit of grabbing the defaults
every time there is an update.

I did that (few times):D and still the same thing. And after I close
that error message a new window pops up : "Either there is no default
mail client or the default mail client cannot fulfil the messaging
request... " Like I said... it used to work fine, and sometimes (after
messing around with settings) it works ONCE.

I have the same problem, i don't succeed to activate (WLM is the standard
e-mail).

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail
In the right window where it says default , right click on that, modify, and
enter Windows live Mail
Ever since Vista and updates with outlook etc it seems that the default
doesn't always stick, it always looks for outlook

The following procedure will rewrite the default protocol
assignments in the registry:
Open the Default Programs applet, then click on "Set program
access and computer defaults." Expand the Custom selection, and
select Windows Live Mail. Click OK.

I tried all this but nothing helps.
It seems indeed that Office is not leaving Outlook so that the register
update may do it, but i that is normally the last action i prefer to take.

I looked under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail and in the right
side it is Wildows Live Mail Can't do much there ... I also did the
sugested Default Programs fix... same thing. Same error messages.

Do you even have MS Office installed? If so, why not just uninstall it if
you aren't going to use it?
P.S. Isn't it wonderful how the MS Outlook Team automatically assumes you
wish to use Outlook? User defaults should be sacrosanct; and application
programmers should leave them alone.

My conclusion is that it can't work and that MS Office is so chauvinistic
that it don't allow anny other e-mail programs!

Unfortunately, I have no experience with trying to remove just MS Outlook,
which is what I would have attempted under your circumstances. But I agree
that the MS Office Suite is "chauvinistic", and assume (sometimes
incorrectly) that the end user wants the full suite, including MS Outlook
active, and MS Outlook as the default email program. Probably because
Microsoft is geared toward support of the Office suite in an enterprise
environment, and not on a "Personal Computer" (in the literal sense of the
word, "personal").

OL is rather hardy on being the default...OL updates will return OL07 as the default client. On Vista its my preferred default, on
XP/OL3 unit WLM is my default).

I have Vista Ultimate 64-bit & Office Professional 2007 on one desktop.
Vista Ultimate 32-bit & Office Pro 2007 on two laptops.
I use the Calendar function of Outlook, but not the mail part.
So, uninstalling Outlook would not be an option for me.
The problem of not being able to send an Office document, Word, Excel etc.
exists on all my machines.

2007 Enterprise Edition. When I click on Send to Email Recipient in MS Word,
I get the error merssage that Word cannot log in. I applied all the default
changes and checked the registry. Windows Live Mail does open when I click on
the Send to Email, but it does not open a new email with the attachment.
Strangely, if I repeat the process, the new email does open with the
attachment. It seems to work mainly if WLM is not open when I click on the
Send to Email even though I have to go through the error message first.

Neil, you have the same problem as I do... Let me know if you found
anything to solve this, I will do the same. I have talked to some other
people that say it works perfectly !!! I can't believe it... Obviously
we at least know it is not impossible :-)

I have the same problem with Microsoft Office 2007 Home not being able to
access the Contact list for Live Mail even when Live Mail has all the
defaults, etc. Works OK with Windows Mail though.
Seems like Office is looking for the actual Address Book and not the Live
Contact list. There should be no conflict but there is.
What will happen when I go to Win 7 and use Live Mail?? Likely the same
problem.

Right-click (Default) > Modify...
In the Value data box type: Windows Live Mail
Click: OK
To add the other items right-click in the empty space in the right pane: New > String Value
Name the new item as stated above
Once again right-click > Modify...
Enter the corresponding value
Rinse and Repeat for all items. Then exit registry.
This has worked for me on three separate systems. Now the "send" function in both Word and Excel opens a new message from WLM.
I also read in another forum (but didn't try it) where someone suggested chagning the registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Clients > Mail
from (Default) REG_SZ (value not set)
to (Default) REG_SZ Windows Live Mail
