WLM Stopped working

I'm running Vista Home Premium, SP2, 2 GB of RAM, Firefox, WLM, all WU's
current.

I was in WLM mail newsgroups earlier today and things just stopped. WLM
stopped responding. Now I cannot log into WLM. It used to log into window
Live by itself (password and all) from my desktop icon, but now the only
thing that happens when I try to open my WLM app window is I'm taken to IE
(7). Then when when I try to sign in Windows live it won't do it.

I've already ran SAS, MBAM, CCleaner and Avira in Safe mode but found
nothing. Then I did a system restore back to a few days ago but I still
can't get into my WLM account. I got to this Newsgroup by using my old
Windows mail account.

Any help would be greatly appreciated............Paul Calcagno

Peter, the only thing that happened was that WLM showed `not responding' in
the blue banner region.

I'm a bit embarassed to say that I don't even know how I connect to WLM. I
mean, I have a `live' account and my WLM normally has both my main account
(pcal...@cfl.rr.com) plus a hotmail account that's apparently linked to
WLM somehow. So what I'm saying is that when I originally got WLM working I
really was never sure how things go together. I don't have a clue why I need
a live account to use WLM. No one's every explained that to me.

Ildhund, I'm sorry to say that I don't know how to access `Event Viewer'.
Perhaps you could advise me how to access it's contents and then I can send
it along.

Thanks for your interest..........Paul C.

You are confusing a couple of things. Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail
are email clients / applications. They don't have "accounts" per se - they
are "utilized BY accounts". The accounts are established through your email
providers. Your email provider accounts are the ones ending with @live.com
and @cfl.rr.com. They were setup in those applications, WLM and WM via the
Tools - Accounts (Tools on the menu bar across the top of the email screen .
. . . ). When you access mail via IE7, you are going to either the Windows
Live Hotmail, or, Roadrunner's website. If you can not log on at those
websites, you will have to contact those providers.

It is confusing, but Windows Live Mail is not Windows Live Hotmail (thanks
again to MS). Windows Live Mail was part of the Windows Essentials suite of
software (which you may have installed all of it, or just pieces). The
email
account was actually established via Windows Live Hotmail.

Windows Live Mail, if installed on your PC like Windows Mail is apparently
installed on your PC (you have Vista-?), then you should have an icon for
it, or be accessible through Start - All Programs - Windows Essentials /
Windows Live Mail. If your icon is taking you to IE7 it is not a shortcut
to the WLM application on your PC. Look for that one, you may have
accidentally deleted it (check the Recycle bin). If you right click on your
icon and go to Properties you will see the "Target" and "Start In"
directories.

Let me try to reiterate what's going on. And I apologize for sounding
confused because I am.
Normally I click on my WLM desktop icon and a message comes up saying it's
signing into WLM. Then WLM just opens and I can read my mail coming into my
main e-mail address of pcal...@cfl.rr.com. Once open I can also access my
hotmail account which I almost never use. In the upper right hand screen it
says I'm signed into WL ID.
However, now what's happening when I click the desktop WLM icon is IE opens
and I'm invited to sign into my WL ID account. So, the first thing is I have
no clue why IE is opening up when I click my WLM icon. That never used to
happen.
Ok, so I can sign into my WL ID account (and see my hotmail mail) but I have
no clue how to open, or link, or whatever to WLM.
Help!!...........Paul C.

Ok this is really screwy. I just tried something on a lark and it worked. I
can now access my WLM mail account. Apparently the desktop icon was screwed
up because when I tried Start===>All programs and clicked on Windows live
mail, my WLM opened up. This leads me to believe that my original desktop
icon got screwed up somehow when WLM stopped responding. I also now notice
that the desktop icon has changed in appearance. It now looks like it used
to (it had changed to look like a file folder when WLM was not responding)
but now it's back to the original look and when I double click it it opens
up WLM just fine.

Sorry for all the confusion and thanks for the assistance.......Paul C

sil759, thanks for your valiant attempt to explain all this to me. Frankly,
it's still confusing which me leads be to believe the next time I can't get
into WLM, it's going to take me another day to get my WLM working again. No
fault of yours, of course.

I'll spend sometime re-reading what you explained until maybe I'll get it.
My measure of how well I understand something is if I'm able to explain it
to someone else and even answer questions about it. I'm not even close, so
I'll probably read your explanation many times and then go Google it until
it's clear. I need to get to the point were I can explain the
difference/relevance of Windows Live ID, WLM and WL Hotmail. I know they're
inter-related but am not sure how yet.

Even though you've got it sorted out this time, getting to know the troubleshooting tools at your disposal might save a lot of grief in the future. Read about Event Viewer in Vista here:
http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/vista/vista_event_viewer.htm

And there's also the WLMail log, which may look daunting but you can often catch sight of something to help you (or others here or at Support) work out what's gone wrong. You have to enable logging at Tools > Options > Advanced > Maintenance, and the log itself (called appropriately enough WindowsLiveMail.log) lives in the Store folder at the location revealed by clicking the Store folder button on that same Maintenance page. It's a rolling log, with newer events at the bottom and old ones culled from the top to make sure it never grows beyond about 5MB. It opens with Notepad.
