I don't know where you heard that rumour, but Microsoft has just recently
launched Windows Live Hotmail. Which is hotmail but with the whole new Ajax
enabled Kahuna front end, which was in beta for almost 2 years.
As to Outlook Mail Live Desktop. I'm not entirely sure what you're referring
to here although I'm guessing that it's the Outlook plugin that allows you
to sync with your hotmail account (currently only available to paying
subscribers, e.g. MSN Premium users).
If this is what you're referring to then the good news is that there will be
an upcoming beta for a new release of this and eventually that product will
be made available for free to all users rather than at current to paying
subscribers. I don't know yet whether this will be a managed or open beta
however the Windows Live group have recently been doing open/public betas
rather than managed ones.

MS has updated Hotmail on the web. If I can assume what you didn't write is
that that presentation will replace hotmail-msn mail. What is the real issue
is I use Outlook 6 replacement or WLMDb which goes to a hotmail mailbox. I
hate the web based product and like my client based software better and I
would hate to lose that and the MSN mailbox that I have. If you respond
please provide a more detail response as reading between the lines is a
little difficult.

Thanks
