Hi Everyone,

I just set my aunt up tonight with WINDOWS LIVE MAIL email client for
her AOL email. She is on dialup with Earthlink but everytime I add an
address to address book in Windows Live Mail, when you close WLM and re open
it, the addresses are gone. When you close WLM and then open it back the
addresses are gone and it says YOU HAVE NO CONTACTS.

Please tell me why this is happening? I use hotmail myself and all my
addresses book is stored on hotmail

I just downloaded WLM on my aunts PC tonight.. Why are the addresses keep
going missing?

Are you signed in with a Live ID?
Does it say Sign in or a Live ID in the top right corner?
Contacts added while signed in will not be visible when not signed in.

No, when that came up I hit CANCEL and did a manual email address add

Hello Christopher,

One option..
Configure/Register her Earthlink email address as Live ID..she will still retain her Earthlink address as her email address, but
she will have the ability for Contacts and Calender in WLM that will reside locally and on the Live servers and alleviate the no
contacts option since a Live ID will be in use.
https://accountservices.passport.net
Once the page loads, look in the center under 'Related links' - Signup for an account
Click Yes (I have an email address), click Continue, the page will load, fill in all the necessary detail
Once complete, go to http://contacts.live.com to enter, edit, manage(import/export) contacts.

When configuring that earthlink Live ID create a different and unique password. Use that Live ID to logon to Windows Live in WLM,
then if not previously entered in the web interface, enter or import her contacts into WLM.
- Preferred method to enter contacts -->> imo, when using a Live ID import contacts using the web interface at contacts.live.com.
The web import is more robust than the tool in WLM. (note..to use the web interface the Live ID must have already been created or
registered).

An alternate option...create a new Live.com email address at
https://signup.live.com/signup.aspx
and use that as the Live ID in WLM. It is not necessary to use the email account. She can still setup here Earthlink account as the
primary(or only) email address.

Why is it happening...? I wish I could answer, since I can't duplicate your issue on my XP, Vista or Win7 systems(with or without a
Live ID). That does not mean it is not occurring for you and others(it's been reported before), all we know is that some have had
trouble with contacts when not using a Live ID in WLM.

If I may ask, is here Earthlink account functional in WLM(send and receive etc) ?

Hi Winston,

I will try that.. I will register her AOL ADDRESS as a LIVE MAIL ID.....
Since using her AOL ADDRESS will not come with an email address

Then tell WINDOWS LIVE MAIL I have a PASSPORT / LIVE ID and then that should
let me keep her contacts, and she'll stop loosing them?

Wait you confused me when you said she'll have access to LIVE CALENDAR /
Address book

How does that work if I register her address SCRE...@AOL.COM as her
PASSPORT, how will she be able to use the email address book that's saved
on the WLM server and the calendar that will sync from WLM email client to
the web?

Oh wait..... ok the first option makes no sense to me because.....

Using SCRE...@AOL.COM as a passport wont allow me to use the SERVER based
Contacts to where when she closes WLM. the contacts will always be saved
online. Since using the LOCAL ADDRESSBOOK keeps loosing the contacts.

PLUS on top of that...... There's no way to hide that account where she cant
sent email from that HOTMAIL account....

Cause she keeps saying she hates MSN and hotmail....... Everyone in her
family uses AOL. She would throw a fit having anything MSN. I don't know why
she hates it she said she WILL NOT sign up for a MSN Messenger buddylist
when I asked her the other night to get on MSN with my mother.

Hi again Winston,

Oh never mind...... I just re read that first paragraph

If I register her AOL ACCOUNT...... as a Live passport she WILL HAVE access
to the windows Live Contacts that are saved ON the web like I do in my
@Live.com account?

BUT.. Will I have a way inside WLM CLIENT to hide that email address so mail
cant be sent from the passport.net address?

Sorry very tired to night... So I am miss reading.. Please forgive

Think its time to hit the hay! I will look for a reply in the morning :)

Good Night!

I suggested to register her Earthlink address as a Live ID, not her AOL address.

Yes...any Live ID (hotmail.com, live.com, msn.com, or 3rd party registered) will have access via that Live ID username/pw to
contacts.live.com just like your @Live.com account.

When registering a 3rd party email address you don't get a Hotmail Inbox. You would still use that account's existing username/pw
to send mail if and only if you chose to setup that account in WLM(another reason I suggested when registering a 3rd party email
address as a Live ID choose a different password than the one being used for that email address' mail server)

Once the contacts are entered in either WLM or the web interface they will be available in both locations as long as that same Live
ID is used to sign on to Windows Live in WLM.

Setup as many email accounts as you need in WLM.
e.g.
Her Earthlink account using the Earthlink pop3 or imap settings and/or her AOL account using whatever settings AOL requires.

Her are the steps.
1. Register 3rd party email address as Live ID(create a password different than the one in use for that email addresses email
account)
2. Once created, using IE logon to account.live.com and verify the account is registered, a secret question is in place, and an
alternate email address, save your account settings when prompted.
3. Go to Contacts.live.com and enter/import contacts
or
Close IE, then open WLM--when WLM opens use that now registered Live ID to sign in to Windows Live and enter or import the
contacts.
4. Setup as many email accounts as necessary.

Morning Winston,

Oh that's cool, so I could set up her EL email address as a Live ID ( Use to
be called passports ) and would be able to use ADDRESS BOOK SYNC. ( via web
and synced to WLM )

Nice!

Gotcha!

I will do that next time I am down there!

Thanks again!

Oh hey just thought of this..

what if she ever changes her mind and wants to get on MSN MESSENGER?

Will she have to use that EARTHLINK address as her MSN EMAIL address or....
use the AOL address as an MSN messenger handle?

Any Live ID is capable of using Windows Live Messenger(MSN Messenger became Windows Live Messenger with version 8.1, WLMsgr current
is Version 2009 Build 14.0.8064.206).

The contacts in that Live ID will be available in WLMsgr as long as an IM address is entered into the contact IM address field and
both agree to be IM Contacts.

winston,
I tried to access contacts using a 3rd party registered ID.
contacts.live.com redirects to http://mail.live.com/?rru=contacts and gives
this error:

Sign-in Error

Hello Ron,

Works fine here..on 4 different 3rd party email addresses.
- earthlink.net, yahoo.com, gmail.com, and *.org

My spouse's earthlink.net and *.edu also work.

To ensure the above I also tested the following and all accounts can access
- account.live.com (it has a link to People i.e. Contacts)
- people.live.com (same as contacts)
- profile.live.com (People link)

A few Q's ....

Has the account profile been filled out(especially birth date which determines age and age based consent and access to Live
Services due to some markets having age based restrictions)

How long has it been since that third party Live ID was created and the full account profile filled out ?

ah crap....... this is why I hate posting on forums sometimes.. I got the
information way too late....

I will have to go back and either a> Close the @live.com account and try
this again with just the earthlink address

or B> leave it as is

Actually no, all I put in was birth year.... 1951.... but... I will go back
and recreate the earthlink account.

I AM STARTING TO GET ANNOYED... now I cant recreate the earthlink account as
a passport even though I successfully closed it a couple hours ago.
