You can enable/disable the save password from the top right windows of
WLM where your live mail id is. Click the downward arrow then choose
"change id". However, that signin username/password will not prevent
anybody from opening WLM, it's purpose(I'm not sure), I think is for
messenger. Try to cancel the signin window instead and you'll find
out WLM will still open.
The purpose of the sign-in is to enable synchronization with your Live ID contacts.

Thanks for the info. What's the relation of the sign-in to the
messenger shortcut at the bottom of the left menu. If I cancel the
sign-in instead of filling in the password, when WLM comes up the
messenger shortcut is not present. This is the reason I taught the
sign-in is for messenger.

Thanks for the info. When I first set up WLM sign-in, I used my
hotmail.com account which is fine cause all my contacts were complete.
Without realizing there is a relation to the id you use to sign-in,
when I switch to my live.com account all the contact entries were
gone. Now I know why.
One thing that bothered me about WLM is when you decide to stop
the Live ID sign-in (or switch to a different one), all of a sudden all
your contacts are missing! Luckily, someone here showed me how to
copy the transient Live contacts to permanent WLM contacts. The
exact method escapes me at the moment, but I'm sure someone else
remembers how.
That would be a good idea if contact will be made permanent globally
It appears WLM was designed to use contacts from live.com or any of
the hotmai.com or MSN.com whichever is the default used for
signing-in. I do not use WLM for any of my pop3 accounts and do not
have an IMAP account. So all I have are three http accounts.
What does WLM use for contacts when you have pop3 or IMAP accounts
only?
You can import contacts from five different sources, including the Windows
Address Book (.WAB).
I'm aware of the imports, that's what I did with the live.com account
from Outlook. So, if you start fresh from a POP3 account you'll start
from scratch, that's what you're saying, right? And if you have
multiple POPs does WLM behaves the same way as http's that each
account contacts are independent of each other?
If you have POP accounts only, Contacts will initially be empty.
There is only one set of Contacts for all POP accounts.
> If you have POP accounts only, Contacts will initially be empty.

That might be a bit misleading, Gary. As I understand it, contacts lists are independent of the mail accounts you may have set up;
they depend only on Live ID. If you sign in with a Live ID, then the contacts available will be the ones corresponding to that ID
regardless of whether you also have an account set up in WLMail using that address. If you do not sign in, then the contacts
available will be any you have set up (entered, imported) while not signed in. They will probably only be available to WLMail,
whereas contacts associated with a Live ID should be available to Hotmail, Messenger (, Spaces, SkyDrive...) and indeed Windows
Contacts (and thus Windows Mail in Vista, although I don't know how that works, because I'm still on XP).
So you could have two people (Husband and Wife) who share a Windows user profile but each have their own POP3 mail account. They
will share an instance of WLMail (and be able to read each other's mail), but could have different contacts lists which they access
by signing in with different Live IDs. I have yet to find a way of synchronizing any contacts they may have in common, though, and I
suspect it's not possible. And as you frequently point out, if Husband doesn't want Wife to read his mail or vice versa, they should
set up different password-protected Windows user accounts.

Why do you assume that a Live ID is required?
Gary did not mention Live ID.
I have 4 pop accounts and do not have a live ID.
There is only one set of Contacts for the 4 POP accounts.

WLM requires a default pop3 accounts, right? If you change the
default to other accounts, contacts remains the same? Is that what
you mean?

You can use WLM without any email accounts if you only do newsgroups.
For email, you can use http, pop3, or imap.
The type of email account that you have determines where the contacts are.

I understand WLM contact mechanics with http accounts(no pop3) from
Gary and you. Since I have no pop3 setup, I've thrown some questions
to Gary for future settings just in case. I now know http contacts
depends on the http email you've used to sign-in. What I'm not sure
of, is, how multiple pop3 accounts will behave. According to Gary and
you, POP3 accounts use one contact globaly. What I'm not sure of is,
is this contact from the default POP3 account. What will happen if
you change the default POP3 account to another account?
Since HTTP accounts contacts behaves independently from each other, I
would think POP3 will behave the same way.
If WLM is set with mixed accounts http, pop3, IMAP will signin-in live
account still be the default contact?
My understanding is that during a given WLM session, only one set of
contacts is active.
If you have signed in with a Live ID, the contacts associated with that
particular Live ID will be active, and no other contacts are available,
regardless of which account you send a message from. So, don't
think of it as each HTTP account having its own contacts available
at all times.
If you have not signed in with a Live ID, all accounts (POP and HTTP)
use the static (non-synchronized) set of Contacts. Individual POP
accounts do not have their own set of contacts.
Thanks.

- Most of the time..that's how I thought it was supposed to work.
- if all accounts are pop3 and not used for Messenger as a Live ID- yes
Here's where I'm seeing some variation on Vista.
- if WLM contains both Pop3(non Live ID) accounts and Live ID(Hotmail or
Messenger or an 'external' email account with a Live ID, after removal of
the Live ID accounts..the Contacts may still default to the last signed on
Live ID(no Live ID sign-on when the WLM dialog box, only Cancel). Note:
External is a non live.com, hotmail.com, msn.com address that is used as a
Live ID.
- if all accounts are removed(all pop3, live id http and external),
recreation of a pop3 account when first opening WLM even though no sign on
is present will result in use of the last Live ID signed on Contacts.
Even if that Live ID Contact file is emptied, newly added contacts will be
added to the last Live ID.

I said nothing about a Live ID being required. You - Ron - may have only one set of contacts for four POP accounts: I have only POP
accounts and six sets of contacts. The point is that there is *no* correlation between contacts and mail accounts. There *is*
correlation between contacts and Live ID. If a mail account address happens to have an associated Live ID, then you could claim that
there was a correlation with that account, but it's only indirect.

Oh yes..the Default folder above..
That folder did not appear on this Vista unit until I completely removed WLM
1606, deleted the registry key at HK_CU\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live
Mail, the Windows Mail folder in the User directory and the Windows Mail
folder in the Program Files folder. Following up with a 1606 reinstall using
the msi file.
I suspect my earlier 'clean install' of WLM 1606 wasn't so---when I first
installed 1606, I used Vista's Program & Features(Add Remove) to remove the
Beta(1365), followed up with the Beta removal then post a restart installed
1606 via the Live Installer.
