Hi, all.

I'm posting this for a friend who doesn't have Usenet access. He just
bought a new laptop with Windows 7 on it and found that it doesn't
have Outlook Express 6 or 7 (or, at least he can't find it).

1) Where's the best place to get a full download of OE, whether it is
6, 7, or 2010?

2) to the subject line, my friend has Live (or Live Mail, whatever
it's properly called) set up properly according to the docs and
according to what the MS KB says, but he can only receive incoming E-
mail when he attempts to Send, he gets a "cannot find server error."

He has all the special security stuff turned OFF and the POP3 servers
set up like this:

Incoming mail (POP3): mail.roadrunner.com
Outgoing mail (SMTP): smtp.roadrunner.com

Account name and PW are correct.

Since I'm posting by long-distance so to speak, I may have some of
this wrong, so please be gentle with me.

If this is the WRONG place to post Win 7 Live problems, please tell
me what NG(s) are better. Thanks in advance.

You cannot install Outlook Express on Windows 7.

Your friend should contact Roadrunner for help with configuring Windows Live
Mail as they are experienced to provide that help with the major email clients.

Thanks for the help. I didn't respond earlier because of computer
trouble.

I don't have the problem yet, but WHY can't someone install OE on
Win 7? I tracked down OE 2010 which SEEMS to be intended for that
purpose. Just an editorial comment but when will developers get it
thru their thick heads that users do NOT like it when programs they
know how to use and like suddenly go away in a new version in favor
of something supposedly better. These misguided souls need to
understand that NOT everything new is necessarily better. And,
while I'm on my soapbox, the name of the game in SW today, both
apps and O/S, is glitz - make it LOOK like it's all new and all
better and gullible users will buy.

What really sucks, though, is that when one buys a new PC today,
they're stuck. I went out of my way to buy MS Office 2003 and
dumped the 2007 that came preinstalled on my wife's laptop because
so much of the screen was devoted to icons and tool modification
settings.

There is no such thing as OE 2010 unless it is a hacked version of OE.

I understand that you may not wish to move on, but Windows Live Mail is
basically OE in new clothing, with new features and functionality. You are in
the minority. Life goes on. Sorry to be so blunt.

As for Office 2003 vs. 2007, in my opinion you made a mistake. The ribbon can be
hidden and you can use Office 2007 with the horrific menu only system that we're
all used to. Once you get used to the ribbon, though, it is far more powerful
and useful than you think. Anyway, using older software is certainly your
choice. Office 2003 is still supported for now.
