Win 98 SE
IE 6 SP1
OE 6

I thought I had fixed the problem but I guess I haven't. I keep receiving
critical update notices for the same update (KB837009). I have installed
this thing I don't know how many times.

It's not listed in my Add/Remove Programs. I ran BelArc Advisor and it is
not listed in there.

I used to see two updates: KB837009 and 823559. Well, whatever I did fixed
something because I didn't get the 823559 today.

Why won't this install? This is getting very annoying.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

Look in Windows Update.log or iuhist.xml (both are files on your machine)
for errors associated with the attempted install(s) of 837009. Write them
down and post them in your reply.

Also, Copy/paste the following line into an IE Addressbar, click on GO, then
copy/paste the results into your reply:

javascript:navigator.appMinorVersion

Assuming you're posting from the problem machine, your headers indicate that
you have a later Cumulative Update for Outlook Express presently installed
(MS04-018/823353) which supercedes MS04-013/837009 anyway, so it's nothing
to be overly concerned about.

PA Bear,

837009 was not in Windows Update.log. This was at the top of iuhist.xml (I
didn't know how much you wanted me to copy). It looked like KB837009
completed on 2004-04-17, 2004-11-02, 2004-11-03, 2004-11-04, 2004-11-05,
2004-11-09, and this one.

Yes, I am posting from the problem machine. If I have a more current update
than 837009 then why does it keep prompting me to load it? I am on a dialup
so it's annoying to wait for it to tell me what the critical update is and
it's the same thing over and over again.

I tried going to Windows Update, got the same critical update, clicked on
"Read more...". I downloaded the update for MS OE 6 (Q837009) and MS OE 6
SP1 (OE6.0sp1-KB837009-x86-ENU.exe). Error when I double-clicked on
Q837009 -- requires Win XP. Error when I doubled-clicked on
OE6.0sp1-KB837009-x86-ENU.exe -- requires Service Pack 1 to be installed.
So apparently I don't have OE 6 SP1. I tried doing a search on Microsoft
but I didn't see any download for OE 6 SP1. I don't see SP1 when I click on
Help | Microsoft Outlook Express. Hmmmm...

Thanks for your help.

Did you reboot after installing?

No, you do. The error is MS foggy way of saying what I said earlier: A
later update is already installed which supercedes 837009.

Try this:

Disable your anti-virus app and close all applications (windows) > Uninstall
'Outlook Express Q823353' > Reboot. [If you find 'Outlook Express Q837009',
uninstall it, too.]

Download 823353 via this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=AD6A96BC-DAF0-4EAB-89B8-BD702B3E3E5D&displaylang=en

With anti-virus and all other applications still closed, click on the saved
download to install. Reboot.

Check in at Windows Update to see if 837009 is still being offered to you.

If it said I should reboot, then I did, otherwise I don't remember.

I did everything you said to do except I installed the
OE6.0sp1-KB837009-x86-ENU.exe that I had previously downloaded. After
uninstalling Q823353, it let me install this. After rebooting I went into
Windows Update and there are no critical updates for me.

I was apprehensive about installing Q823353 because it didn't state on the
download page that it was for Windows 98. It stated:

Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition (SE), and
Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) – Review the FAQ section of this
bulletin for details about these operating systems.

In the FAQ section, it stated:

Are Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, or Windows Millennium Edition
critically affected by any of the vulnerabilities that are addressed in this
security bulletin?
No. None of these vulnerabilities are critical in severity on Windows 98, on
Windows 98 Second Edition, or on Windows Millennium Edition.

Since Windows Update doesn't think I think Q823353, should I install it
anyway?

Thanks for all your help!
Debbie

Yes, via the download from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=AD6A96BC-DAF0-4EAB-89B8-BD702B3E3E5D&displaylang=en.
(Remember, you *had* it installed previously.)

AFAIC Windows Update is really screwy about this one in Win98: It's offered
to some users but not others, for no apparent reason whatsoever.
