I'd guess he just plugged in the server names; same as with MS Outlook
Express. Well, except that the menu path to the server properties is not the
same. But the functionality is there.

Thunderbird automatically creates an account msnews.microsoft.com under
Tools/ Account settings when you subscribe to a Newsgroup. Just fill in
your name and mail-id (onscreen version!), and choose an Outgoing Server
(SMTP) to send/post if you have multiple mail accounts.
Mohan...
A. Set the defaults to use Outlook Express to access Newsgroups:
1. Control Panel | Internet Options | Programs | Newsgroups | Select Outlook
Express and OK your way out;
2. Do not let Outlook or Outlook Express let themselves set to the default
newsreader:
a. Start Outlook Express to access news. When OE prompts you to make it
your default newsreader the next time you launch it, click the "Don't ask me
again" box and then click the "No" button;
b. Close Outlook Express and start Outlook. When it asks whether you
want to set Outlook as your default mail and news handler choose "No".
Leave Outlook open and continue to the next section.
3. Set the Outlook Toolbar:
a. Choose View | Toolbars | Customize*;
b. Select the Commands tab;
c. From the Categories list select "Go";
d. From the Commands list select "News" and drag & drop it to any place
you want on the Toolbar. The default location is in the "Go" menu.
e. Press Close to return to Outlook.
*Not seeing the News option in Customize? Choose View | Toolbars | Customize
| Toolbars (tab) | Select Menu Bar and press Reset | Start again from #3
above.
B. Start Outlook Express as Newsreader from a shortcut
1. Copy the following line to your clipboard (CTRL+C):
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /newsonly
2. Right click on an empty area of your Desktop and choose New > Shortcut;
3. Paste the contents of your clipboard (CTRL+V) into the "Type the location
of the item" box;
4. Press Next;
5. Type a name for the shortcut (e.g., Newsreader);
6. Press Finish and your shortcut will be created. You can drag & drop this
shortcut to anywhere you want (e.g., Quick Launch toolbar, Shortcuts section
of the Navigation Pane in Outlook 2003).

In Thunderbird, goto Tools>Account Settings>Account Actions>Add Other
Account.
Then select Newsgroup Account then Continue button,
Then enter Your Name and Email Address (this should be your online alias
name and email address to avoid spam), then Continue button,
Then enter Newsgroup Server e.g. 'msnews.microsoft.com' then Continue
button,
Then accept the Account Name default, press Continue button
Then Done button.

The behavior you describe is for "top posting", the preferred method for
replies in this group. The Mozilla behavior is for "bottom posting", the
preferred method for replies in most of the rest of Usenet.
You will need, at the least, XP SP2 (I think) to modify the behavior in MSOE
using a registry hack. I don't know the key to change; I've not been using
MSOE a lot since upgrading my main computer to Windows 7.
Or you could try OE-QuoteFix:
http://home.in.tum.de/~jain/software/oe-quotefix/
OE-QuoteFix also cures some other lapses in the programming of MS Outlook
Express.

It is actually a "news server", not a "newsgroup". As posted by Ken:
news.mozilla.org.
For most newsgroups including this one you want to bottom-post or inline
post with appropriate trimming. This pretty well covers the possibilities
but always assume bottom posting unless otherwise advised.

Myself, I usually look at a few posts to see what kind of quoting is going
on and follow suit. When I open a post with responses already made, then
I'll follow whatever method was used there to keep the flow of the
information going.
