Re MSOE 6.0:

I have created about a dozen folders into which I have Message rules move
incoming emails. The message rules work great but about half of the folders
get highlighted when a new email is moved into them and about half do not
get highlighted. Hence sometimes, I do not discover some new emails till
hours or days later. Any clues on how to get the folders to be highlighted
and display the number of new emails?

Are any of the target folders actually sub-folders of other folders? If so,
you'll only see them highlighted if you've expanded that branch of folders.

Also check what their synchronisation is? It doesn't show new mail if sync.
is "Don't Sync..."....

In response to Doug and Thomas:

Here is some additional info:

1. The folders which are not being highlighted are one level below the
MSOE "Local Folders" folder. Non are sub folders.

2. The folders are email, not newsgroup folders so no synch is involved.

Hmmm. How about this: Sometimes, human fingers do strange things. Check your
message rules and be absolutely sure you didn't accidentally check the "Mark
as Read" box. Folders are only highlighted if there are UNread messages
within.

OK...continuing to look for the problem...

Per your suggestion, I have now verified the status of the MSOE rules item,
"mark as read" check box. In each instance of the half dozen folders that
for some reason are not being highlighted, none of the rules pertaining to
these folders have the "mark as read" box checked. However all of them do
have "flag message" checked.

I'm mystified, but in a message yesterday, Frank Saunders recommended that
you look at a couple of links. At the first link, look for the heading "Why
don't my message rules work?". There might be a clue there. If not, it's
still interesting reading. It might help ME figure out why my NY Times
headlines emails are being sent to the delete folder, along with the junk
mail containing references to viagra, growth hormones, illegal mortgage
schemes and lesbian farm animals. :-)

Here are the links Frank suggested, in case you can't find his message for
some reason:

Your current Identity may be damaged, or at least the Message Rules section
of the Registry. YMMV.

Here is an additional bit of info:

I noticed this am that the folders which I am saying are not being
highlighted are in fact being highlighted but only for a fraction of a
second, barely long enough to detect by eye. I would estimate the on
interval is about .1 seconds or less. Each of the folders exhibits this same
charateristic, being highlighted for a fraction of a second the coming to
rest not being highlighted. Maybe this helps shed some light on the problem.

Question re diagnosing the problem:

Suspecting that the problem has something to do with my message rules, do
you know if the rules are in a particular file, which I can locate, copy,
and send to you for review?

Frank,

Per your recommend, from "tomsterdam - inside OE", here is list of FAQS.
Which one are you referencing?

* can't I print messages correctly?
* can't I open attachments in OE6?
* OE delete news messages automatically with automatic maintenance off?
* is the file Folders.dbx so big?
* does OE not add reply characters to some of my replies?
* can't OE insert my signature after quoted text in replies?
* can't I set OE as the default email client?
* can't I Reply to Author in newsgroups?
* do I see a Choose Profile window when I Reply to Author in newsgroups?
* can't I move my OE files and address book to a folder on my network?
* do I receive the error message "No Sender Specified"?
* don't my message rules work?
* OE trys to install another language when I click certain messages?
* can't I import a *.wab file from another computer?
* can't I delete messages inside OE?
* doesn't OE preview pictures any more?
* does OE show duplicate messages in my Hotmail or IMAP account?
* does OE always open such a small window?

Per your recommend, from "tomsterdam - Tips", I have now read all, have
carefully applied these practices, but unfortunately I see nothing here
referencing folder highlighting.

Your current Identity may be corrupt. Try the rules in a new one.

They are in the Registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook
Express\5.0\Rules
and, as far as I'm concerned, are not in human readable form.
