I created a new rule that flags my messages and colors them
blue -- so I have a chance of finding them in the future.
Not so much the original post as discussion within a thread.
Ok, works with the threads expanded but disappears when they
are collapsed. Is there a way to flag the thread?

The only way to select messages in this way is to manually apply the Watch
option to any thread you are interested in.

You can also simply go to View | Current View and check Show replies to my
messages. The only posts that will show are the ones you are involved in.

If you want to make switching back and forth easier, and do a lot more,
Download OETool, (freeware).

Ctrl-F3 - View the entire message without opening it. Shows you the HTML
code if there is any, also shows all of the headers.

....ok not much time but it adds up, when there are preprogrammed methods
