Recently my midi files I attach to email aren't sounding. All other
sounds are working. I have not done anything I'm aware of to change
any settings and the volume is on. I use Outlook Express and go to
Format/Background/Sound and attach the file just fine. But when I
send the email it doesn't make a sound. What am I missing?

I have had the same problem with the volume=-9640 by default. I am really
getting tired of changing it to the "0" every time I want to include
background sound. I wonder if a person could go back to the earlier version
of Outlook Express instead of waiting for Microsoft to fix the default
problem?
Others might like to know that they have to go up to "View" then click
"Source Edit" then go down and click "Source" at the bottom of the email in
order to change the default "-9640" to "O". Then if they click "Edit" tab
next to the "Source" tab the email and sound should be seen and heard.

Here is a fix that worked for me.

Right-click on the Volume icon in the systray. Left-click on Open Audio
Control. Check the slider bar for Midi. In my case, some program had moved
that all the way to the bottom, which resulted in the -9640 volume setting.
Move it up.

When I moved mine to about half-way and tried a new OE message, the volume
setting showed -540 but I could still hear it loud and clear. Move yours to
whatever is comfortable or whatever it takes to get a zero setting.

Have no clue what program might have performed this "service" for me.

I have performed the right click on the volume icon in the systray; left
click on open audio control, and moved the slider bar for midi synth all the
way up. And, I have reset the volume in the Outlook Express e-mail to
volume=0. That will work okay until the next time I start the computer, and
then I have to go through the same exercises. This problem only started
about 3 weeks ago. If Microsoft is aware of the problem, why don't they fix
it?

My OS is Windows XP Pro SP2

Anyone have any more ideas about how to fix this annoying problem?

Thanks!

Thanks it worked...we've been working on this for a week. Have always
wondered what had happened as we were able to do it before. If you ever find
out that you can download a former version of Outlook Express and have it
work would you let me know. Again, thanks...you made my day.

Did you see this possible solution Steve Cochrane gave a while back?

It helped someone who had the synthesizer volume wrong.

Cheers, Helen
