contacts toolbar folder empty

I use the contacts preview toolbar folder, which usually shows all my
contacts, easy to click on one and send email; now that folder shows "There
are no contacts to display. Click on Contacts to create a new contact." But,
all my contacts are still in my address book. Did I deselect something while
I was cleaning up some group contacts?

I found a hint elsewhere, if there are more than 1000 contacts, the panel
appears empty; I deleted some old contacts, and the panel is again
populated...
