I'm trying to package IE8 using the IEAK 8 wizard and I'm running into a
problem with the reboot. I'm choosing the following options for user
interaction:

 Hands-free InstallationHands-free Installation
 Default-Prompt for restart after installation.

The problem is that the prompt for restart never occurs. It's always forcing
a reboot after installation. If I choose Hands-free Installation and No
Restart, that works fine, but there is no message telling the user to reboot
the machine.

I opened the ie8_main.log logfile and found the following:

06:56.671: INFO: REBOOT: required.
06:56.718: INFO: REBOOT: User selected to reboot now.
06:56.750: INFO: Installer return value: hr=0x00000000
06:56.843: INFO: Setup exit code: 0x00000000.
06:56.875: INFO: Installer Process exit code: 0x00000bc2.
06:56.890: INFO: Rebooting computer...

The "User selected to reboot now." is a furphy. "It never asked the
question!!"

Any ideas?

No one else has responded and I am still not aware of a resolution. It
appears that there were similar issues with IEAK7 and there has been no
resolution provided. My gut feeling is that if you select "Hands-free
Installation" then the "Default - Prompt" option is ineffective. I have
implemented my install via a VBScript and I have set the package to "No
Restart" using the script to popup a message and reboot if the user so
desires.

Good Luck.

Microsoft Please provide a solution for this, the IEAK 8 tool doesn't support
manual rebooting after installing IE8.

I am unaware of Microsoft monitoring this old IEAK for IE6 group.

While there does not seem to be a current newsgroup for IEAK, I can
only suggest you try the IE7/IE8 general group.
The recommended newsgroup is microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general

In a proper newsreader:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general

If you must use a web interface:

See above but they haven't had a presence there for a long time either.

But what was the question? ; )

Oh. From April...

Why would an administrator want "manual rebooting"?
That doesn't sound like "automation". <eg>

Do the reasons really matter? The more important question is why does
Microsoft put the option there and it not function?

I re-read the question. It still seems like a contradiction to me:
1. Hands free
AND?
2. Reboot prompt

What happens if you don't use Hands free? Do you get a prompt then?

Otherwise, does this symptom happen only to a restricted user account?
E.g. perhaps that prompt option should only be seen by users who have
administrative authority?

The IEAK has an option for "silent" or as the original poster calls it "hands
free" installation. When going through the steps to build the .exe/.msi that
IEAK ultimately produces it give you the option on how to behave upon
completion of install.

The options are basically prompt the user for restart. (The issue in
question here) do not restart or restart without prompting.

The "prompt the user for restart" behaves exactly the same as restart
without prompting. This is ultimately the issue I would like to have
resolved. I want it to behave the way it advertises and actually prompt the
user.

Also, it does not matter the user's permissions on the machine. I have had
domain admins experience the same auto reboot as a restricted user.
