First of all, hello. "First time poster".

I am desperately looking for help. Out of nowhere, my computer will not let
me surf the net through my address bar. Cannot pull down the drop down
menus of sites, cannot manually type in an address. When I try, screen
freezes....BUT, I can surf through clicking on links in my Favorites and
navigate through pages internally. I have made sure all my Microsoft
updates are up to date, Scanned for viruses w/Norton and ran Windows
Defender and Malicious software scan....finding nothing. Has anyone ever
heard of this problem? Thanks.

I'm having the exact same problem for the past three days, and have actually
gone through the same steps, updating Windows, my security system, etc. The
only difference is that my Microsoft Word files are also simultaneously
frozen as well, and I can't access my documents. I used system restore to go
back about one week and it stopped the problem for about 24 hours, and now
it's back again. I also cannot use my address bar in Internet Explorer, but
can access websites through my "favorites". Does anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks.

Same problem - first thing this morning except that when I hit the address
bar pulldown everything locks up. I have done all the virus checks, updates
and cleanups that I can think of, with no success. Any suggestions?

Linda,

Easy Fix: Visit http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and
scroll
down to Item No. 383 "Hewlett-Packard's Share-to-Web software - Fix
(MS06-015)"
to download a registry fix.

Note: You may need to temporarily disable your antivirus program
in order to safely run the scripted fix.

Just to update from my request for help....
I retried directions from the Microsoft link.....at present my address
bar is functioning....
microsoft.com/?kbid=918165
Difference on this attempt I ended most recent verclisid.exe process
that was showing in "Task Manager" and it seems to have fixed the
problem.
Now I will see if this has upset some of my HP parts e.g., scanner and
printer.

Another option.

Use a .reg file already done for the purpose.

http://patch-info.de/WinXP/Downloads/KB908531_Share-To-Web.zip

Unzip it, extract the .reg file to a folder, right-click it and select
Merge and confirm when asked.

A few days ago internet explorer stalled every time I tried to use the
address bar or the drop down menu. Today I spent several hours updating /
scanning for viruses and spyware/adware, to no avail.
Then I got your .regfile and unzipped it.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! My address bar is working again.

I have been having the same difficulty all week! I've scanned, defragged,
virus-scanned - all to no avail. I came across a post ascribing the
difficulty to Windows Update KB908531, installed on 4/18/2006. I followed
the suggestion to remove it via the "add/remove" function, and like magic,
everything is back to normal. What a relief. It is a very simple fix - I
hope it continues to work! I detest having to spend loads of time on the
phone with tech support trying our every little trickin the book!

I suppose Microsoft will release a new update to correct the original update
!

Yes, a new update will be released as you can see in this response:

Problems in Windows Explorer or the Windows shell after you install
security update MS06-015 (15 Apr-06)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/918165

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS06-015
Vulnerability in Windows Explorer Could Allow Remote Code Execution
(908531)
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-015.mspx has
been revised to v1.2 to reflect the issues in KB918165.
From the FAQ section:
"On Tuesday, April 25, Microsoft will issue a targeted re-release of
the MS06-015 update."

Now may not be the time to learn Regedit.
I suggest you use a .reg file already done for the purpose.

Unzip it, extract the .reg file to a folder, right-click it and select

Alan,

I just did the Share_to_We.zip and it worked perfectly. IE address bar now
works and I am able to access the "Save As", "File Open" and "Insert Picture
(etc.)" commands in all my MSOffice programs.

THANK YOU!!!!! You have SAVED ME TODAY!
