I recently installed more memory (2GB) on my PC (win pro 32bits) and now I
can't get IE8 to start! Is it possible that my Dell Dimension 2400 can't
handle that much memory? I bought it in 2003, and it used to have 348MB
memory installed which wasn't enough (hence the reason i installed more
memory).
thanks in advance

Hi Liz I want to help you. I do not think that adding more memory will
interfere with IE actually it should make your computer run faster. Now i
have some questions to I would like you to answer and then I will see what I
can do.
1. When you had IE 7 did it work?
2. After you upgraded to IE8 did it work it all and when did it stop working?
3. When you click the internet explorer icon on your desktop exactly what
happens, do you get an error message? Does the icon change color after you
click on it? and does an hourglass appear?
4. Is your computer experienceing any strange unexplained behavihior such
as a dramatic slowdown pop ups etc.
5. Have you tried right clicking on the IE icon on your desktop and
clicking on open, open home page, or run?
Please answer these questions get back to me and I will see if I can help
you resolve the issue.

Hi Kayla,
Thank you for your quick reply and offer of help. I'm new to these
newsgroups and I think I might have accidentally sent a blank reply, if so, I
apologize, I'm just learning this.
Anyway, I installed IE8 a few weeks ago, before I installed the new memory
last week, it worked fine, as did the IE7 and also after I installed the two
memory modules (1 GB each) which greatly improved the speed and performence.
But a couple of days ago my internet explorer would not open when tried to
open it from the start menu. There is no error messege,it just won't start.
I tried system restore, but that tool opened halfway (just the blue frame of
the window) the window itself is just a white screen.
Also, I don't have the IE8 icon on my desktop that i could right-click to
"open". I haven't tried the "run" command yet, i think I'll try that
tomorrow.

Thanks :)

oh interesting there is no icon on your desktop because when IE installs it
automatically puts one there. So let us do some things. first let us verify
you have IE. go to start, contol panel, add/remove prgrams. A list will
generate of all the programs on your computer. see if you have IE and what
version. Scroll down the whole list and look. Next go to start and you
should see IE listed there. right click it select send to and create desktop
shortcut. Now you know you have IE and you have a shortcut icon. now click
the shortcu ticon to open. if that fails right click it and click run, open
or open home page. Let me know if this resolves things

I had IE8 but I uninstalled it and reinstalled IE7 thinking that the problem
was the software version. After reinstall, I tried what you said, but no
luck, when I right-click on IE there is no response at all. Also there is
something that I noticed on my desktop at the time of this trouble. Most of
the icons on my desktop suddenly have a little blue box with a number (I
think 33) inside, on them. I've never seen or heard of anything like this
before, and I don't know what caused then to suddenly appear like that,
whatever it is, it probably has something to do with the trouble I'm having
with my computer. Have you ever heard of anything like this?
Thanks.

Hi Liz, hmmm very strange about the number 33 on your destktop. I think your
system has been compromised. Dont' freak out there may still be hope yet.
What anti virus software do you have? I would strongly reccommend you go to
http://www.avast.com and download and install the free trial. Then do a full
thourugh virus scan. That will catch any viruses and and then you have the
option to lock them away in a quarantine chest. Although some viruses are so
nasty you may want to have it professional fixed which means you will have to
shell out money. There is also the possibility you have spyware and or
malware. Go to htttp://www.spywareterminator.com and when you download your
computer save it to the desktop. Then click the icon install it and run it.
Run a full scan. Do you have kids? Now the reason I ask is kids are
notorious for going to shady sites that can cause this kind of infection and
they can hide their tracks. So if you do you may want to consider monitering
their web use and talking to them. Anybody else got any ideas?

[If the system's already compromised, how will you know Avast or any other
AV app has installed properly, is fully updated, and is working properly?
What about the AV app already has installed? Was it running in the
background when she installed and/or uninstalled IE8?]

Thank you both for replying. I'm running Norton 360 on my computer for the
past month or so, before that I ran McAffee. I'm not sure how I could
download anything that isn't already installed on my computer, as was IE7.
Because I can't get an internet connection. I do have some recovery boot
discs which I created about a month ago before all this trouble started.
Should I try this, and how do I do this?
Thanks

[Crosspost to IE General]

Thread history:

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3). Is the computer
still running IE8?

Was the McAfee application or N360 installed when the problem first started?

Was the McAfee application or N360 running in the background when you
installed IE8?

What was the name & version (if you know) of the McAfee application (e.g.,
McAfee Security Center; McAfee VIrusScan Plus; McAfee Internet Security)?
Was your McAfee subscription still current when you installed N360 or had it
expired?

Did you download/run the McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool before you
installed N360?

Is N360 fully-patched via Live Update? Can you even use LiveUpdate?

Did a McAfee or Norton application come preinstalled on the machine when you
bought it back in 2003?

Hi Liz again, oops I forgot you cannot connect so you cannot take my last
piece of advice however I did some research. With this kind of a severe
virus you should probably take it to a store or hire a technician to repair
it. They will probably reccommend a clean reinnstallation of Windows. Now
would be a great time to back up all your files so you do not lose anything.
I don't know if viruses affect files so you may want to check with the
technician.
Hope things get better,
Kaja

Hi. My os version is XP sp3. Norton 360 was installed when the problem
began, and I uninstalled McAffee when prompted during the Norton install.
I think McAfee Security Center was running in the backround when I first
installed IE8.
McAfee wasn't expired (it was aol version, I think, which is free) but the
McAfee Security Center expired April 3, 2009, (which was a paid version).
I'm not sure what you mean by "consumer version uninstall, but when I first
ran the Norton 360, Norton prompted me to unistall McAfee before it could
completely install, followed by a screen from McAfee (I think) which assisted
with the uninstall.
I'm not sure if the Norton is patched or not but I can't run Live update due
to the lack of internet connection, but I'm sure Live update ran before this
problem occurred.
I don't remember which application (Norton or McAfee) was preinstalled back
in 2003.

Thanks Kaja, I hope so too. I've been using my netbook but I really miss
using my desktop and hope I can resolve this issue soon. Luckily, I backed
up all my files before this happened on CD.
Thanks for your help and suggestions. :)

Repost: Is the computer still running IE8?

1. Download the McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool, saving it to your
desktop (#2 of this three-step fix):
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507

2. Close all open applications (anything with an icon on the taskbar) then
double-click on the saved file to run the tool. Don't touch/use the
computer until the process finishes.

3. Reboot.

4. Make certain that either the Norton Firewall is enabled or the Windows
Firewall is enabled (one, not both).

Does the behavior persist?

Thanks Pa Bear, I'm not sure if I can download the tool unless it's
already on my computer, I'll have to check on that. Thanks

Liz,
You did not mention the exact XP Version you have installed. If you login to
your computer with a username and password, then what I mention below would
be worth a try.

Create an Administrator account...

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/279783

To open the User Accounts tool, open Control Panel from the Start menu, and
then double click User Accounts.

To Create a New User Account
1.. Click Create a new account in the Pick a task list box.
2.. Type the name that you want to use for the account, and then click
Next.
3.. Select the desired account type, and then click Create Account.
Login using this new account and then see if Internet Explorer works.

Regards,

Trevor Benedict
