Hi, I just transferred my IE6 Favorites from one computer to another, using
the Export/Import function. The problem is now that they are all
alphabetical. Previously, I had them arranged in a special order, depending
on how often I visited that site. I could reorder them, but this would take
forever, since I have 1000's of favorites. Is there any way to fix this?
What if I did a manual copy and paste, instead of importing/exporting?

Thanks for any help!

Julie

This is because the sort order is stored in the registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Explorer\MenuOrder\Favorites

Import/Export Wizard will not record this key.

Thanks Ramesh! Do you happen to know how I transfer this registry key to my
new computer? I don't even know where to find registry keys. Thanks!

Just in case Ramesh doesn't return soon to the thread...

On your old computer:

Start-Run-Regedit
Navigate down to the key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Favorites

Keep your highlight on that key in the left hand pane.
Use the menu option Registry export and send it to a file, say
Order.reg

Transfer that file to your new computer.
Double-click it to Merge it.
That should be all.

Thanks so much Alan for your response! I followed your instructions, which
worked perfectly, and the new key was added to my new registry; however, the
bookmarks are still alphabetized, even after I restarted. Very strange...

No real idea but try this in case something was left in the old
Favorites key that may affect things:

In your new PC, use Regedit and delete the Favorites key then import
Order.reg again. (You can use the menu item Registry-Import or
doubleclick Order.reg, it makes no difference)

Hi again Alan. I deleted the key then merged again. Same result. Maybe I'm
doing something wrong, or maybe someone will know how to fix this. Thanks
for trying!

Hi Julie,

I don't see that you can do much wrong.
I just tried it successfully from a Win98 machine to a Win ME machine
(I don't have XP installed at the moment)

I exported the favorites from IE on 98.
I exported the Registry key to Order.reg
I imported the 98 favorites to the ME machine.
Order was alpha as expected.
I then closed IE and merged Order.reg
I started IE again.
The order was now as on 98.
No restart was necessary.

Alan, thanks so much for experimenting with this! And sorry for a very late
reply. I had other issues the past few days such as connectivity problems.
What I just tried doing was merging the registry key first, then importing
the favorites, but that led to other problems. See my other thread I just
posted about this if you, or anyone else, is interested. I appreciate all
your efforts!

Julie
