I am having a problem when I try to go into Internet
Explorer and go to hotmail to check my email. I get a gray
box that says "Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered
a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience. It has been doing this for a couple of
weeks now. Do anyone have any idean why it's doing this. I
can browse thru some websites without any problems. But
not hotmail.

Rule out parasites.

Try this: Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions

If this clears your problem then find out who the culprit(s) is/are with
these tools.

Let AD-Aware Scan your system for advertising Spyware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com

If you use a HOSTS file, beware of this new issue.
Ad-Aware has decided to include a new detection when scanning the HOSTS
file. This now creates a "Bad hosts file entry" in the log file generated at
the end of a scan. The best thing to do is to place a check in each entry,
right-click and select: "Add selection to ignorelist". Otherwise if you let
AWW "fix" these items it will trash the HOSTS file! Even if you have it
"locked" by [example] SpywareBlaster or Winpatrol. It does not return the
attributes and renames the HOSTS file incorrectly to hosts.

and:

SpyBot-S&D

p.s Reset the 3rd party browser setting.

More: This may be caused by a third-party program (adware, spyware,
parasite).
Get AdAware and SpyBot and run them both. Keep them up to date.

IMPORTANT:
Before trying to remove spyware, download a copy of LSPFIX from
the URL below - some malware may kill your internet connection when it is
removed, this program will enable you to regain your connection.

XP)

Important: "So how did I get infected in the first place?"

I cannot get Explorer to open. When I click on the ble "e"
icon or try and open it nothing happens. Everything else on
my computer is working fine. I can get out to the web using
Netscape, but nothing happens with Internet Explorer. Why
would it just stop working like this and is there a way to
get it going again? THank you gor your help.

Go to Start, Run, type IEXPLORE.EXE
click OK. If that works, then there is problem
with your IE shortcut, and not IE.

Sorry, not that much more that's easily
communicated via newsgroups. Looks
like somehow IE is messed up. You may
end up having to reinstall it, though it may
also be a result of adware as well.

Things to try, probably long-shots:

First, I assume you have tried rebooting the
computer.

Second, after you run IEXPLORE.EXE,
and nothing happens, press CTRL ALT
DELETE at the same time, this will get
you into the Task Manager, you may see
a Processes tab there, click it and see if
IEXPLORE.EXE is there in the list, and whether there
are multiple IEXPLORE.EXE processes there.
Highlight each IEXPLORE and click End Task, one by
one. Then once there are no more of them there,
try opening IE again.

Third, go to Start, then Control Panel, find
Internet Options. Can you open it? If so, go
to the Advanced tab, and uncheck Enable
third party browser extensions, OK, and then try
opening IE again.

Thank you again - I will try all your suggestions. I am embarassed to tell you this, but I fell into the bulletin board area by accident while looking around the Microsoft site. How do I get back there to post other questions if I have other problems? It seems like such a good tool to go to for help. If I have to reinstall IE , do I fiorst have to uninstall it, and if so will Ilose anything on my computer? My email is ima...@hotmail.com, please write to me there incase I lose this page again. You really have been very helpful and I appreciate your time. Thank you.
