While Microsoft does not say so on its website, I found out that Internet
Explorer 5.5 SP2 which is the last IE for Windows 95 is still available for
download.

Here's the URL:

http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3/static/ie55sp2/x86/en/ie5setup.exe

And here's the content needed in iebatch.txt in the same directory as
ie5setup.exe:

[DownloadSite]
Display=0
DownloadLocation="http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3
/static/ie55sp2/x86/en"
[Custom]
SetupMode=0
Component=IE4Shell NTx86
[Options]
Quiet=U
[Reboot]
Reboot=0
[End]

Hope this helps everyone out.

P.S.: Sorry I posted to a few to many newsgroups out of excitement.

Be sure to remove or comment out the "Component" line as it is for NT only.

Can't you replace NTx86 with WIN on the component line to install active
desktop on win95 upon installing ie55sp2 without having to install ie4
first?

Yes. The "iebatch.txt" file for Windows 95 is as follows.
A reboot is required.

[Custom]
SetupMode=0

Component=IE4Shell_Win

[Options]
Quiet=U
[Reboot]
Reboot=0
[End]

I have returned from several weeks away to find that my
computer will not allow me to delete temporary internet
files and cookies to clean up my Internet and temp cache.
I have tried to repair ie5.5 but get a message that
SHDOCLC.DLL exists but needs a newer version. I have tried
reloading ie5setup.exe but the process stops after 523Kb
of 854Kb recieved from download site. I cannot download
updates from the download location given in earlier
messages. I cannot download virus protection updates from
McAfee. I cannot download or print from any website (very
frustrating while trying to help my son with homework).
Any ideas????

Try downloading the full browser from browsers.evolt.org or something like
that. Maybe Microsoft is starting to kill us ie55 users or something. :(

See if this is helpful.

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

Also, you can download a fresh copy of "SHDOCLC.DLL"
from
http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3/static/ie55sp2/x86/en/ie_s2.cab
Note that this is a "cab within a cab" file and will require two
extractions.
WinZip can handle cab files.
