I am using Outlook Express 5.5 in Windows 98SE and frequently get the
following message in a box with the black on yellow exclamation point when
connected to my ISP's newsgroups server via my firewalled (ZoneAlarm) ADSL
connection :
The TCP/IP connection was unexpectedly terminated by the server.
The details for this error are:
Configuration:
Account: news.skynet.be
Server: news.skynet.be
Protocol: NNTP
Port: 119
Secure(SSL): 0
Code: 800ccc0f
I don't even know where to begin to look for a solution, could anybody shed
any light on this?
Marco
There should only be one copy of wsock32.dll on your computer, in
windows\system. Connection problems such as you describe can be caused by
more than one copy of, or the wrong version of, winsock.
Rename any additional copies of wsock32.dll that are not located in the
Windows\System folder.
Restart the computer in safe mode command prompt only, and rename the
Wsock32.dll file in the Windows\System folder to Wsock32.old assuming you do
not already have a file named Wsock32.old. If you do have a file by this
name, use a file name extension that is not currently in use.
Restart Windows 95/98 normally.
If no joy, extract a new copy of the Wsock32.dll file from your original
Windows 98 CD-ROM into the Windows\System folder using System File Checker.
You will find it in precopy1.cab
Restart your computer.

Hi Sandi,
Thank you for your message, but I am afraid that the problem could be
elsewhere. I
searched the HDD for Wsock32.dll and there was only one such file found and
it is indeed in the Windows\System folder. Also, I am using Windows 98SE,
OEM
version on my Packard Bell. I searched both master CDs that came with my
system and couldn't find Wsock32.dll. If the file is packed into one of the
numerous zip files then it would take me one or two days to find it! Other
than re-installing Windows there seems to be no other way to find the file
in question.
Using System Information I saw that the version of my Wsock32.dll is
4.10.1998 - BSD Socket API for Windows.
Any suggestions?

I sometimes see that also, and I'm connected via ADSL as well. I don't know
yet what causes it, but I do know what fixes it for me. I'm not sure if
this will apply to you.
My computer connects through a NIC to the ADSL modem. To connect to the
Internet, I have a Virtual-Private Network connection in My Computer|
Dial-Up Connections. Once that ADSL connection is established, I logon to my
ISP (all of this is automated by a script from the ISP).
When I see that error in OE, I also have problems in IE. Disconnecting the
VPN and then re-connecting fixes it, so I suspect it might be due to some
glitch by the ADSL provider. In my case that is KPN, the former Dutch PTT.
I don't know anything about how your ADSL connection works, but you might
try this.

Well, the problem is that I don't know where a new wsock32.dll file is. I
only have one on my HD in Windows\System, unless another is "hidden" away in
some zip file. The same goes for the two Master CDs that came with my
Packard Bell. I did a "Find Files or Folders" search on both CDs and no sign
of a wsock32.dll file, unless it is packed in a zip file. I started SFC, but
then realized that I couldn't specify a search path simply because I don't
know one. How can we be so sure that the wsock32.dll file is the culprit? I
don't get this error in Internet Explorer 5.5.
So, what am I to do?

My ADSL modem is internal. I am not sure about VPN, but in the ADSL setup
the VPN server Host name or IP address is 0 (zero). I wouldn't know whether
I could disconnect and then reconnect the VPN. How do you do this? Also, I
don't have this error in Internet Explorer 5.5.

Second, contact your service provider (or visit their support NGs) to
determine if others see this problem as well. That might give you some
solutions.
steve
I think our ADSL service is quite different, so I'm not sure if any of this
will be of help.

I just mean for test purposes to determine if that is the problem.

My ISP (adsl) has newsgroups specifically devoted to the ADSL issue on their
network. You might check your NGs on your ISP's server. ISP's are
typically not much help.

Its not the firewall or other stuff, as you've tested. Can't rule out OE
completely though.

You could also try lower the settings on the firewall program. sometimes if set
to high you get that sort of message. Maybe you should look at the FAQ's at the
Zone alarm site and see if that has been posted. Just a thought and now back to
you on the PB news group.
Elector
It's not the firewall. I ran the connection w/o it and got the same error!
