Good idea, Fitzie. I could have used this when I was on dialup. I didn't
like having to check mail every 9 minutes to stay online.

MSN drives me nuts... 20 minutes of not changing web pages and my dial-up
shuts off... often times without notifying or asking me. Unfortunately, for
a little while longer, I am stuck with them <long story right now>.
Hopefully in Aug. I'll be switching to dsl.
In the meantime.. I've tried Rasputin and a few other things to no avail so
I made 2 web pages that just keep switching to each other every 27 seconds.
If anyone else wants to use it, you are welcome. Just call it up and then
minimize it...it's kept me online all day so far :)
Put the shortcut on your desktop and let her run.

Fitzie,

If you get a reconnect or any kind of warning when this happens, I have a
nifty little program that I use called "push the freakin' button - PTFB".
It automatically pushes the buttons that you teach it to push (very user
friendly) and doesn't take up much memory you can find out more about it
at: http://www.bobos.demon.co.uk/

My ISP shuts me off every 4 hours but gives a warning first, this little
program pushes the "reconnect" button so fast that I hardly know that I've
been knocked off. Also, the warning is usually hidden under whatever I'm
working on but this program sees it right away.

oh cool, Sandy, I'll try it... MSN has evidently gotten pretty savvy about
these programs but I'm always willing to give it a shot !
Thanks !

Fitzie,

It´s easier than that. In one of my hundreds of calls to my *former* provider (who shall remain nameless, although they have three letters and their service resembles this: <LOL>), a tech suggested that I set my mail to be checked every five or ten minutes. Now I am never, ever kicked off. As a matter of fact, if I leave posts downloading and forget to check the little "hang up when finished" box, I can leave and come back several hours later, and *still* be connected. :))

Thanks but that no longer works with MSN, Meli... I used to do that too.
Now I'm not even getting the pop-up that asks if I'd like to stay online or
not, just boom, off I go. I'm out of MSN asap. Hopefully by the end of
Aug. I'll be on dsl. My little website is working though and I've been
online now for quite a while. I'm coming up to the 4 hour shut-off and will
see what happens.

Have you tried the trick with the mail, Sandy? Debi mentioned getting tired of having to check her mail, but I don´t actually check it. And I think that I don´t get kicked off, even when my OE is not open, although it almost always *is* open. I just know that sometimes I leave for hours with something downloading, and when I get back, I´m still connected. Fitzie, I have MSN!! I swear, I never get kicked off...knock on wood. Maybe that's something new and they haven't gotten around to me yet.

I want dsl, too, but I hear so many stories of computers freezing up. It's always the same tune. Lately my connections have been reasonably reliable, too, and I locked myself into a three-year service contract a year and a half ago. I'll owe them money if I break it, though I've been seriously considering it for months.

Well.. for what it's worth.. I did something similar to a previous idea.. I save a web-page (Connecticut DOT) onto my system that
has some information that updates frequently. Now, because it updates every few minutes, I'm in 'constant' use.

ANY web-page can be used if you add a <Meta refresh> tag.... here's where I got the idea:

From a previous post by ...Wayne - somewhere in Central Florida

[SNIP]
<HEAD>.....< /HEAD> Encloses the head of the document. The following optional tag is placed inside the head to have your page
automatically reloaded every X seconds:
<META HTTP-EQUIV="REFRESH" CONTENT=X >

I have version 6, Fitzie, but I wasn't getting kicked off when I still had 5.6. But, you know, I use OE6 for my default mail, and I have another news identity which is a Hotmail account. I don't know if that affects it.

Yes, that's what I did, Meli. I had the settings fixed to check the mail.
But what I don't like is having OE check the mail at all because it sends
mail when it checks it. I don't like anything going out before its ready so
I hated having to let it check/send mail.

I'm posting this here...hope you see it... to tell you that just last night I signed to get DSL with Microsoft. They have a special right now, no charges for anything and $50 a month (it's $40 if you use Quest for your phone service), and you get 10 hours of dial-up free a month, 8 additional email addresses (not that I'll use them), and, best of all, a web page with 30 megas of storage! That means I can store my ASF files without the service telling me I'm stealing their bandwidth, and shutting me down, which is what just happened to me with Angelfire. (Well, I do understand their point of view: no visits, no clicks on those pesky popups...though nobody clicks on them, anyway.)

As I told you, I'm locked into a year-and-a-half contract (of three originally), so this was my best option. I hear of people who love cable, and it's a little cheaper and a little faster, but for me, this was my best alternative.

BTW, this is not meant to be solicitation for Microsoft. I don't know if their service will be any good or not. I'm just telling you because I know you have MSN now, like I do, and they have this special.

Wow, I'm surprised, Fitzie. As big as Microsoft is, you'd think it would be everywhere!  Well, after suffering with their dial-up you're probably sick of them, but I think everyone is sick of dial-up, no matter who their provider is.

Well, this special is good till October 23, I think. Maybe things will change in a month or two.

Anyway, I'm pretty excited! :)

Sorry, Jill, but....I agree with the children!!!

I have a T-1 line at school, and let me tell you that surfing at home is sooooo frustrating!!  I have little tricks...like when I'm searching for images, I open three or four pages for the browsers, and go from one to the other, back and forth, because I get so impatient waiting for the pages to load. And the asf's almost always cut in and out, although that has really improved lately, and it takes forever to download anything.

Of course, I'll be paying double what I do now, but at least people can contact me (on my one phone line), and I plan to download so much music that my pc won't hold it all. :)))  And, Jill, 30 megas of webspace, and nobody telling me what I can do with them! For me that's sixty of my songs....and, of course, I don't even *know* sixty songs!

my school district just *gave* us brandnew Compaq laptops!!!  Just so I don't break it or get it stolen, in three years it's mine for $10. :)) (Which, of course, is what it will be worth in three years.) Of course, it's supposed to be for work....ha, that's what *they* think!! :))  The first thing I'm gonna do is find out how to reconfigure it so that I can avoid going through their network. Of course, I *might* use it for work sometime, who knows....;)))
