I started experiencing this problem a few weeks ago, and
have been unable to find a fix, or even a mention of it in
any support groups/articles. I'm running Windows 2000 on
a Compaq Armada E500 with 196 MB RAM.

All child windows within an IE session (including the
parent) close when any of the windows in the relationship
close. For example, if I go to a site that generates a
pop-up ad, and I close that pop-up ad, the main window
also closes. Or if I use CTL-N to create a new window,
both the original window AND the new window will close if
I close either of them. That's a relatively minor
annoyance, but the BIGGEST problem is that I am no longer
able to use Windows Update, since as soon as the "Please
wait..." window closes, the main browser window closes as
well.

Note that if I create a new IE window by selecting it from
the Programs menu, each window can be closed
independently. There is a definite tie between parent and
child windows in regards to this problem.

I have tried uninstalling IE6 (which is what I was running
when I first encountered the problem) and reinstalling
IE5.5 and the problem remains. The "fix" option
under "Add/Remove Programs" IE6 didn't resolve the issue
either.

An up-to-date virus scan with NAV7 reported no problems.

Anybody got any suggestions? I appreciate your assistance!

Hi Alan,
This is a guess. I think I remember reading that this was the cure for
someone else. With TweakUI, the Explorer tab, make sure that "Manipulate
connected files as a unit" is not checked.
Go to:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q237/9/20.ASP
[Q237920- TweakUI Not on Windows 98 SE or Windows Me CD-ROMs]
for information and a download link.

Hope that this shot in the dark helps?
Don

Don,

First, thank you very much for your response!
Unfortunately, your suggestion did not resolve this
problem. But I had always meant to install TweakUI and
never got around to it. Now I've got it, and I'll see
what other trouble I can get myself into... ;-)

Any other suggestions welcome! :-)

Regards,

Alan
