IE Prompting for Username and Password

When downloading and opening certain file types via IE from a web server, IE
often (but not all the time) prompts for a username and password. This
occurs mainly when downloading office files (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Why
is this? The files to be downloaded are in folders on the server that the
user should have access to. The prompting is also unpredictable. Sometimes
it will prompt for a username and password and other times it will not.

I notice an OPTION method being sent to the server when the prompting
occurs. Is it trying to verify access to a folder?
