I recently consolidated my 2 wab files into 1 (Tom K - you helped me with
this). So I kept my wab file (Tom Richards) and imported the entries from
the old wab (John Murray) into the Tom Richards wab. It seemed to work fine
but then I noticed that the Tom Richards wab was losing the John Murray wab
info whenever I closed OE. I re-imported the wab twice but now I've lost
about 300 entries in my mailing list! The standalone address book entries
are ok, but the group entries are gone. I created a new wab and tried
importing the group into it and it shows up but it's empty. :-( Do I have
to manually re-enter the 300 entries or are they retrievable? The John
Murray wab is still sitting on my pc, so it's available.

Is the John-Murray.wab the one you want to use? Just rename the
Tom-Richard.wab, then rename John-Murray to Tom-Richards. To determine the
exact location of the current (Tom-Richards) *.wab file being used, open the
Address Book and click Help| About Address Book.

On Saurday you wrote:

For the sake of clarity, we are not talking about Identities here, rather
Windows user names. It looks like you logged on to Windows after your clean
install as "John Murray", right? That means your Windows user name is "John
Murray", and you have a "John Murray.pwl" file (password list) and a "John
Murray.wab" (Windows Address Book). You can easily set up a new Windows user
with your real name under Control Panel|Users. Select the option to copy all
the current settings. Then rename "John Murray.pwl" in your Windows folder
to "<new name>.pwl" and restart Windows. Logon as your new name (leave the
password blank to bypass the logon prompt in the future if you want).

Changing the name of the WAB requires editing the registry. Close OE, any
open message window and any open Address Books. Click Start| Run, type
Regedit, and navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WAB\WAB4\Wab File Name

Right-click (Default) in the right-hand pane, click Modify, and change the
filename to your "Tom Richards.wab".

Now when you open OE or the Address Book, it will be using the correct WAB.
You can open the WAB, click File|Import|Address Book (WAB) to import from
your "John Murray.wab".

This all worked great except for the trouble I just outlined. I want to use
Tom Richards.wab but the John Murray.wab has all my most recent info in it -
especially those missing group entries.

Yes, I remember what we're talking about. ;-)

You say the Address Book "loses the John Murray contacts" when you close OE.
Are you viewing the Folder list in the Address Book? Click View|Folders and
Groups if you are not.

Better yet, click Start|Run and type this:

wab /a

Now click View|Folders and Groups. I think the John Murray contacts are in
there, just not in the proper folder.

Ok, first off, please remind me to repress my anal tendencies the next time
I decide to mess with something that's working perfectly fine on my pc. ;-)

I took the email list from my last mailing (9/14 - Properties|Details) and
made a csv file out of it. I imported it into my address book and now I
have my main group back but an address book littered with 1100 emails that I
don't want there - I just want them in the group. But, when I delete an
entry from the address book, it also automatically deletes from the group.
So I re-entered (into the group) the one that automatically deleted and I
noticed that there is a different icon beside the entry that I re-entered
(it has a blue tinge) - presumably this is different from the others? Is
there any way I can delete the 1100 from the main part of the address book
and still have the group retain them?
Thanks, Tom
Tom

Ok then, is there any way to import contacts from a wab directly into a
group that resides in a different wab thus bypassing the main body of that
address book? The 1100 originally got there 1 by 1 - I typed them directly
into the group. They were never a "contact" per se.

Now I have 3 wab files in my data files\outlook express\address book folder:
Tom Richards.wab
John Murray.wab
Pyramid.wab
When I double click the John Murray.wab, up comes my address book the way I
want it - that is, the 1100 members of my group aren't duplicated in the
main body of the address book. So I removed the other 2 wab's and expected
OE to bring up just the John Murray.wab but it doesn't - it shows all 1100
members in the main listing. I'm perplexed.

Ok, now I renamed the registry key
(HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WAB\WAB4\Wab File Name) "John Murray"
and OE opens the correct (preferable) address book. But when I tried to
rename the John Murray.wab to Tom Richards.wab and chenged the key back to
"Tom Richards" it brings up the address book with all 1100 members of my
group in the main body. Weird. I guess I just have to live with a misnamed
wab.

Note: In the John Murray.wab all the entries in my 1100 member group have
the blue-shaded icon beside their names. In the Tom Richards.wab the icon
is grey.

Sorry for obsessing on this Tom.

It's because of how Identities hides folders that don't belong to your
current Identity. I promise you that all the 1100 contacts ARE in the JM.wab
or else they wouldn't be in the group. But since your created that WAB under
a different Identity, that Identities folders are hidden from your current
Identity, although hidden contacts will still be included in any
auto-complete or Find.

I know, since you've mentioned it <eg>, that you are a bit anal retentive on
this matter, but I assure you that no one will ever know your WAB was named
for someone else. ;-)

No, a group is strictly an internal representation and so cannot be imported
or exported. You may have entered those 1100 contacts using the Group|New
Contact dialogue, but they were added into the WAB as contacts nonetheless.
Remember that a Group is not at all like a folder. A group is more like a
virtual folder in that it doesn't actually "contain" anything.
