Hard to say. I've never used Hotmail in OE either, but assume that the
Hotmail would still use the *.dbx format, and that the folders work like a
Pop3 (downloading the mail) rather than IMAP (showing what's on a remote
server). If its the latter, the advice wouldn't work.

Just select the messages in your Hotmail folder and drage them to a local
folder.
You're the local expert on Hotmail. What's the story with that facility
(I've never used it myself).
Can I assume that it works kind of like IMAP?

Pretty much - with IMAP you can tell OE to only mirror certain folders,
but the theoretical advantage of HTTPMail is that is uses ports 80 and
443, the standard HTTP and HTTPS ports, so it should work for people
behind firewalls that block "non-standard" ports. Of course, we've seen
that it's not that straightforward.
From the point of view of client functionality, though, it's very similiar
to IMAP - rules on the server, stuff deleted from the server doesn't
appear on the client, etc. But you can always drag a message from only
message store to another.
