A run of "Windows File Checker" advised me that the file "UNWISE32.EXE" may
be corrupt. I have been having a problem lately of Internet Explorer quite
often "performing an illegal operation" when I try to open or close a file.
This also happens sometimes at start up, when the system tray loads. Then
it "has to be shut down". Could UNWISE32 be the problem? If so, where do I
get a copy of this file to replace the corrupt one. If not, should I
replace it anyway? I tried to find it on my Windows 98 Upgrade Disk that I
used to upgrade Windows 95 and could not locate "UNWISE32.EXE".

Any help that can be given will be much appreciated!!

Ken

unwise32.exe (also unwise.exe) is a program used by many software suppliers
to uninstall their applications (and installed when the application is
installed). I cannot see that a problem with unwise32.exe would lead to any
problems with IE or OE.

For example I see that ICQ 2000 uses unwise32.exe.

Unwise32.exe is an uninstaller -- I have it on my system dealing with AOL instant
messenger.

I would do a search of files and see the location of unwise32.exe -- you probably can
delete the file without windows shedding any tears.

In regards to your IE causing illegal operations -- do a cleanup of your TIF(offline
content as well), delete all files in your windows/temp directory, clear your trash can
and reboot.

You can probably overcome the problem by repairing your IE installation. Go
to Control Panel>Add/Remove Software. Find the current Microsoft Internet
Exploer X.X entry and double-click it. You'll be prompted to 1. Repair, 2.
Restore Previous or 3. Remove it. (Not necessarily that order!) Choose
REPAIR. You may need to have your Win98 system CD handy.
UNWISE is not needed for IE operation.
If the UNWISEXX.EXE is truly farkled, you may be able to replace it from
one of the *.cab files on your system CD. To help find it, download TWEAKUI
from the Microsoft site. It has a *.cab reader utility. WinZip also reads
the *.cab files (www. winzip.com).
Good luck.
