Does anyone know why my spell check tab would always be greyed out. I don't
believe it was like that in OE 4.

Thanks in advance,

You need a 32-bit Spell Check Program, such as one that comes with Word9x/2000, Works, and other MS Products.

** Sometimes the upgrade of IE/OE changes the settings back to the default ones, so RECHECK those SETTINGS. Also, make a backup/copy of your message store folder and address book file, as a precaution, before any upgrade. **

Add MS News Server to your OE with news://msnews.microsoft.com/

Strangely enough, I *did* have Office 2000 installed, but have recently
removed it.
I now have *no* Office files on this system and only have the basic Win95
Wordpad as a word processor.
I have no other programs that have a spell checking facility.
I have cleaned out the registry and manually deleted any remaining folders
from an ADD/REMOVE uninstall of Office.
Something however, allows me to continue spell checking in OE5.
There must be a file that's been left behind, but as I deleted the Office
folder manually, it isn't in there!
It must be somewhere in C:\Windows. The only other file I can find, is a
file called custom.dic which is in C:\Microsoft\proof but that is a standard
text file with just two entries!

Beats me?

The following file may be still remaining on your PC.

Csapi3t1.dll file located in the Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof folder

The file is there OK, but in C:Program Files\Outlook Express
Renamed it to ***.old and sure enough spell check no longer worked.
(Naturally I renamed it back again!)
If anyone wants the file to see if spell check will work without Office
installed I'll gladly email it over, it's only 65Kb in size.

See this article:

Cannot Spell Check Messages in Outlook Express 5
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q224/1/76.asp

On at least one system I had to add the SharedFilesDir value and its data in the listed key.

You posted with OE 5.01 (5.00.2919.6600)

Have you tried the article?

Sorry. I assumed (mistakenly obviously) that 5.01 would show as 5.01xxxx
rather than the 5.00.29xxx.

Upgrading to 5.01 was the first step in folowing the article's suggestions.
Now that I have eliminated that as a possible cure, I'll move on to the
registry.

Thanks.

Your spell check tab disappeared? Do you mean it's missing from the toolbar?
Can you spell check by using the Tools menu or the F7 key? If the button is
just missing from the toolbar all you have to do is right click on it and
select Customize...
