after having installed IE 5.01 (via Windows Update) - I have lost
possibility to perform Windows Update via this very utility altogether.

When I hit "windows Update" either from IE or Startup menus, - the browser
faithfully goes to this page, but once I click on "PRODUCT UPDATES" as
usual - it freezes, and soon after that the whole machine hangs as well.

The problem was recently reported via CNET, with comments that Microsoft
sofar neither commented nor issued a patch (even if they do issue a patch
where the hell am I going to get same if "windows update" is no longer
working?), - however it seems to me that CNET somewhat erroneously
attributed the problem to IE 5.0, saying that upgrading to IE 5.01
eliminates the trouble. Much to my regret I was able to ascertain this is
vice-versa : while I had no troubles with 5.0, the hell broke out immy
after upgrading to 5.01.

Now I cannot return to 5.0, as "Restoring previous configuration" only led
to browser's having stopped working altogether, when trying to re-install
IE 5.0 from CD-ROM (Windows 2000 installation disk) the setup program
said : "You have newer version installed. Installation will not continue".
- and quit. Does anyone know what to do in this situation ?

Would appreciate any comments/advices.
Thanks

For your WU problems, see these articles, the latter one first:

KB VIA EMAIL To have an article sent to you in e-mail, send a message to
"msh...@microsoft.com" (without the quotation marks), and use the Article ID
in the subject line of the message, as in the following example:

SUBJECT: Q119591

For more information about how to order an article by e-mail, send an e-

The article nos. are the 6 digits in the URL following the "q".

As for your other browser problem, I believe IE 5.0 is a core component of
Win2K, so you will have to reinstall Win2K to reinstall IE 5.0 - just like
with Win98SE.

I had the same freezing problem with 5.0 and 5.01. I believe its connected
with the MS JVM .
You can forget the Win Update site and get your updates from the Corporate
MS site. This downloads to your hard drive to allow installation whenever
you choose and makes for easy reinstallation
Go to www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/corporate.asp

The corporate site is not always up to date though. It currently has version 3186 of the JavaVM and I've had version 3188 on my system for months. I just used IE5 Setup and downloaded version 3229. Life would be a lot easier if they would name these files with something meaningful, like including the release date or version number.
